NationalHCAW Newsletter 2023
By Mark Healey
Welcome to issue 21 of our UK Hate Crime Sector Newsletter.
One of the conversations we have had with partners, is about how we work together to break down barriers between different communities and one of the ideas that has come forward - is to ensure we take the opportunity to celebrate aspects of each other's cultures.
Check out the video about Chinese New Year, Year of the Rabbit below, and read the piece submitted by Yoni Gordon-Teller from CST about 'Purim' - the next Jewish holiday that will take place on the 6th/7th March.
Working with CST we will be share information about all the main Jewish holidays this year.
January 2023 appears to have whizzed by in a flash, in the last issue I was wishing you Happy New Year, and with the start of the Chinese New Year on the 22nd of January I have the good fortune to be able to wish you all a Happy New Year again.
I used the Travel China Guide to look up my own Chinese Zodiac Sign - no surprises that I was born under the sign of the Rooster "Back in ancient times when there was no alarm clock, the rooster played an important role in waking people up."
Perhaps that's why I am woke about tackling hate and prejudice.

Holocaust Memorial Day Trust updates
On Thursday 26th January the Holocaust Memorial Day Commemoration took place online with thousands of people joining from across the UK and abroad.

|
Holocaust Memorial Day 2023 UK Online Commemoration
|
|
Holocaust Memorial Day is a time to come together to remember all those affected by the Holocaust and more recent genocides, and to take action to protect those currently at risk of persecution. From educating ourselves to better understand those who we perceive as different, to reporting hate crime if we see it, there are actions we can and must take to make our communities safer.
|
|
Gregory H Stanton, President of Genocide Watch developed the 10 stages of genocide which explains the different stages which lead to genocide. At each of the earlier stages there is an opportunity for members of the community or the International Community to halt the stages and stop genocide before it happens.

The total number of incidents marks a 22 percent increase from the total of 123 university incidents recorded in 2018-2020; the two academic years covered in CST's previous report.

Purim (festival of Lots)
March 6-7 2023
The next major Jewish holiday is the one-day festival of Purim [Pooh-rim]. On this day, the Jewish community recalls the story of Esther, a Jewish queen in Persia who foiled a plot by one of King Ahasuerus’ advisors, Haman, to kill all the Jews.
In both the night and morning of Purim, the story is read in synagogues from a special scroll called a megillah [me-gill-ah], which is the Book of Esther. It is a day of communal celebration, and Communities and families also hold a festive meal in the afternoon.
This is a day of joy and fun, and fancy-dress costumes are traditionally worn, including in public places. It is traditional for many people to collect money and goods for charity and deliver food parcels to friends. This is also one of the few occasions in the year in which the consumption of alcohol is encouraged.
Other traditions include the performance of the megillah as a play, and the eating of triangular pastries called hamantaschen (“Haman’s pockets"), typically filled with a raspberry, apricot, date, or poppy seed paste. We wish all members of the Jewish community a "Chag Purim Sameach!".
