Board Holds Second Regular Meeting of Year

Funding Awarded to Help At-Risk Youth, Stop Gun Violence
The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners approved a funding agreement between the County and the Corporation to Develop Communities of Tampa. The agreement provides $300,000 to support the Safe & Sound Hillsborough Juvenile Justice Reporting Center and Gun Violence Prevention programs. The partnership’s primary goal is to reduce juvenile delinquency, recidivism, and community violence by providing supervision, wraparound services, delinquency interventions, and skills training.

Board Approves Historical Marker for Former State Legislator
The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners approved $30,000 for the creation and placement of a historical marker in honor of former state Rep. Betty Reed, who died last May at the age of 81. The marker will be placed at Lucy Dell Pond Park. American Bronze Foundry, which has been commissioned to produce pieces at various veteran memorials, colleges, and the Vatican, will produce the marker. Reed was a longtime state representative from Hillsborough County who was committed to community service. She introduced and passed legislation affecting health, education, the elderly, and those with disabilities. Reed was inducted into the Hillsborough County Women’s Hall of Fame in 2016.

County Boosts Aid to Juvenile Education Program
The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners approved an agreement between the County and Success 4 Kids and Families. The Fiscal Year 2023 Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) will provide more than $23,500 to support the Juvenile Reentry Education Program, which supplies at-risk youth with the financial assistance needed to take the Test of Adult Basic Education and obtain their General Education Diploma. Overall, the program gives state Department of Juvenile Justice-involved youth tools to reach a higher level of academic achievement and become more employable.
