Dear Community,

We were so honored last Shabbat to be serenaded by Rob Raede and our own cantorial soloist, Phoebe Light. At this Shabbat there were new members present, members long missed and of course many others. The night was magical in both tradition with Rabbi Debi and the enchanting melodies of Rob and Phoebe. I believe all left feeling fulfilled in many ways.

And to news about one of our newest members, UCSB Professor, Jenni Sorkin and wife Cheri Owen. Recently, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art hosted Professor Sorkin as she spoke about her newest book, “Art in California.” The book focuses on California’s many contributions to art history and the events which propelled them forward.

Please read the article below as it explains how east coast artists came to fame more readily and the subject of revisionist history. Mazel Tov, Jenni, your community is most proud of you.

Our next Shabbat is our Tu B’shvat celebration on February 4th and will also include Havdalah. Come to learn about the “birthday of the trees” and what that symbolism represents.

In other news, your Board voted to participate in this year’s Gay Pride Parade. If you go to SYVPride.org, you will learn more and see all the many local sponsors for this event and more information. The parade is June 24th. If you are interested in participating, just drop me a line. Of course, as we get closer, more info will follow.

L’Shalom to all,
Susie Pierson

Joyful Sounds Resounded at the Musical Shabbat on January 13th

Rob Raede and Phoebe Light combined forces to welcome Shabbat with their beautiful voices, accompanied by Rob’s guitar. About 40 people were there to enjoy the experience, and some got into the spirit of things by hand clapping, standing and swaying. Rob created an impromptu shaker band by asking for volunteers to come up and accompany the music with little handheld objects that made a fun sound.

Cooks in our group provided an amazing array of homemade food such as pea soup, fresh salmon, chicken legs and turkey chili, and gluten free lasagna, all accompanied by beautiful salads, a variety of tasty kugels, and yummy desserts.

The photos below don’t do justice to the magic that was created in Rozann Newman’s living room.  A BIG TODAH RABAH goes to Rozann, for offering her beautiful home as a venue for this special night of joy.
