Spring Convocation: Celebrating History and Shaping Our Legacy in Our 98th Year

American Baptist College students, faculty, staff, alumni, and supporters joined together on Tuesday, January 24, for the Spring 2023 Convocation. In her welcoming remarks, student Angela Jefferson noted, “This is our formal event to usher in the spring semester, and we are pleased and honored that you have joined us for this special occasion.”

Executive Vice President Richard Jackson, who served as convener, added, “The theme for today’s program is ‘Celebrating History and Shaping Our Legacy in Our 98th Year.’ It places an intentional focus on this unique time in the College’s life which impacts all of our academic offerings and administrative efforts. It allows us to focus on our perspective as an institution whose expert faculty and strong staff mold our students into agents of social change.”

In delivering the keynote address, President Forrest Harris emphasized how the College has focused on changing the lives of students and the communities they go on to serve. “’Send them away’ is not the proper response for an institution like American Baptist College. ‘Send them away’ has never been an option for us.”

Harris also noted how often students hear the word ‘formation’ during their time at ABC. “We talk so much about formation because it is only in formation that you can have transformation.”

Cracker Barrel Visit

ABC officials recently visited the national headquarters of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store in Lebanon, TN.

Cracker Barrel President and CEO Sandy Cochran hosted the group and presented a historical and current overview of the very popular enterprise. The purpose of the visit was to become more familiar with the intricate operations of the company and the programs that may align with the goals of American Baptist College.

"We were honored to visit Cracker Barrel and to learn about their programs, including their retail style, vintage brand, and their overall operations," said ABC President Forrest Harris.

Cracker Barrel was established in 1969 and has more than 650 locations nationwide.

“Coming Back from COVID-19”
Lunch & BURN

Those who participated in the College’s most recent “Coming Back from COVID-19” Lunch and Learn discussion had a somewhat different experience than previous sessions in the series.

“Today, we’re going to have a ‘Lunch and Burn,’” ABC wellness consultant Jerry Davis announced as he passed out resistance bands. “Guess what? The new year is here and it’s time to make health a priority.”

Davis stressed the importance of starting with small goals, like exercising at your desk three times a day. “If you stay busy throughout the day, you will see results.”

The “Coming Back from COVID-19” Lunch & Learn Series is paid for with funding provided by the U.S. government’s Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) Act to address and/or mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The next Lunch & Learn will take place on Monday, February 20, and will address grief and seasonal depression.

We Remember

American Baptist College extends its deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Cleon Mathis, ABC alumnus (2012-2016), who passed away on January 15. During his studies here on 'The Holy Hill' he demonstrated exemplary commitment — faithfully working in both the Flame Cafe and  in the Gospel Choir as a singer, director and musician – leaving behind many treasured memories for us all.
