February 2023
MCC President's Observation Notes

The Return of Miller Prom!
Miller Prom tickets are sold out! There will be eating, drinking, dancing and carrying-on at the Marquette Park Pavilion Saturday, February 11 for the annual MCC Valentine's Day Dance. The festivities begin at 7:00 pm. See you there.

Talkin' Trash: Litter Abatement in Miller. Since September 2021 the MCC Litter League has logged over 400 work hours cleaning Miller streets. In early 2022 the Miller Community Fund upped our game by contracting Cleanslate Chicago, a litter abatement group who hires and trains hard-to-employ individuals to clean streets. MCF began with a six month trial. Between Litter League and Cleanslate our streets were looking exceptionally great right up to the end of the Cleanslate contract, in October 2022. Once Cleanslate was no longer in the picture, trash and debris returned, leaving our fair community looking very sad indeed by the end of the year.

The Miller Community Fund has renewed and broadened the scope of the Cleanslate contract for 2023. Instead of six months, Cleanslate will visit us 8 times, and will clean E. 7th Avenue, Miller Road, Grand Boulevard and County Line Road on First Fridays in February, March, April, May, June, July, August and September. Cleanslate work covers sidewalks and sides of streets up to the brush line. They will not do the deep cleaning into the brambles that MCC Litter League has traditionally done, making Cleanslate and MCC Litter League complementary partners. Litter League will do the deep cleaning and Cleanslate will do monthly maintenance.

When you see MCC Litter League deep in the brambles, grab a bag and help them out!

Please be sure to check out the MCCCommunityCalendar to help you keep your busy schedules straight.

George Rogge, President

Finally, a little gift from a Chicago poet, to help guide your spirits this winter, Heart Garden..... a poem by Joy Wellington Tillis:

What sort of seeds do you have planted in your heart? You put them there, yet you may or may not know them. Do you have a patch of peace? And a strip of compassion here and there? The hope patch, well-seeded. A plot of serenity will see you through the fall: Harvest kindness and charity for winter's chill.
As wars go on in your heart, remember they come from your mind. Tend... Tend. The weeds will dissipate as you turn yourself over with the soil. Fragile and strong; never abandon your heart garden. Weed out the sorrow, your heart is sturdy stock; a muscle for your life....
Make a generous section for giving. And map love as the largest crop. A baleful. The tiniest heart blooms big love.

St. Mary of the Lake Church

Over 38 million Americans face hunger each and every day, including 1 in 6 children. If we think about hunger as most of us experience it, as a temporary sensation, the solution to this problem is straightforward: we just need to get more food to people who don't have enough. Let St. Mary of the Lake Food Pantry help: Next distribution for free food is Monday, February 20 from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Simply come to St. Mary of the Lake's Lessard Hall, show your Indiana identification and receive free food for you and your family.

Together -- We are Stronger!

St. Mary of the Lake Church is located at 6060 Miller Avenue.
