Wake Forest awarded $30M Lilly Endowment Inc. grant to build national capacity for character education
From President Wente: “Cultivating leadership and character is a reflection of Wake Forest’s deepest values and aspirations and exemplifies our commitment to our motto, Pro Humanitate. With a $30 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. announced this week, I’m excited to say that Wake Forest will lead a national dialogue in higher education placing character at the center of leadership and will become a resource for colleges and universities across the country in developing their capacity to educate character.”
The grant will support the ongoing work of the Program for Leadership and Character to integrate character into coursework and campus programming.
More than $23 million will allow Wake Forest to award grants to other colleges and universities to create their own initiatives focused on character education.
Undergraduate students who have earned at least 40 credit hours (typically sophomores) will receive an email from the Office of the University Registrar about major and minor declaration. During this designated period (Jan. 30-Feb. 3), eligible sophomores declare both majors and minors en masse through the College academic departments without needing to file individual declaration forms through the Office of the University Registrar. A student must declare a major prior to declaring a minor, concentration or foreign area study. Be on the lookout for this email and follow the steps outlined within to declare.

Campus Climate Survey follow-up and invitation to ConsentCon
Climate Survey: During the week of November 14, students, faculty and staff engaged in dialogue about the results of a campus climate survey focused on sexual misconduct. Student safety is a priority for our community, and the survey was designed to measure the prevalence of sexual misconduct on campus, as well as the effectiveness of the university’s training, outreach, prevention, policies and procedures related to this area. This community-engaged approach led to powerful conversations about where we are as a campus and our goals for the future. The themes included developing opportunities for peer-to-peer training, faculty/staff engagement, increased clarity of resources and processes, support for graduate and professional students, increasing trust and transparency, and integrating the work of harm reduction and diversity, equity, and inclusion. For more information on the survey findings, see the executive summary and full report. Students, faculty, and staff can also request facilitated follow-up sessions.
ConsentCon: As part of the continued dialogue and important next steps, you are invited to participate in ConsentCon, a conference dedicated to exploring the meaning and operationalization of consent on college campuses. ConsentCon will be held on Feb. 17, 2023, and will engage students, faculty and staff in a community conversation about consent in pursuit of a campus free of interpersonal violence. The conference will include two keynote sessions: Wanda Swan, prevention strategist, speaker, published scholar; and Jennifer Hirsch and Shamus Khan, researchers and authors of Sexual Citizens. To register for ConsentCon, visit the registration webpage.
