Finals Recital / Solo & Ensemble

The recitals in all of the classes were EXCELLENT!  I am very proud of all of the students who most definitely put great effort into preparing their pieces.

Every last ensemble with a month more of preparation would do an OUTSTANDING job at Solo & Ensemble on March 4th.  Students should strongly consider REGISTERING.  The cost to participate is $o.oo (free), and students will receive a short clinic from a well-respected music educator to help them continue to improve their ensemble skills.

Soloists

Students performing solos for Solo & Ensemble should have confirmed a piano accompanist by now.  There are FIVE districts holding Solo & Ensemble the same exact day, which will be a strain on all of our accompanists in the Portland Metro Area.

If you need assistance finding an accompanist, here are my RECOMMENDATIONS.

Recap: Wind Ensemble Clinic w/Mary Lou Boderman

The Wind Ensemble had an incredible clinic with Mary Lou Boderman (retired/Salem Keizer School District).
She brought several "next level" approaches to our music that should help us really refine our festival set for OSU and PIL.

Oberlin Visit

Carloyn Talarr from PYP reached out to me asking if we would like to have a couple brass professors come visit Cleveland on Monday, February 6th.  I jumped at the chance, and we will have Jeff Scott (French Horn) and Roy Poper (Trumpet) from Oberlin working with our students in the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band.  Unfortunately, they could not make it to the school until after lunch...sorry Symphonic Band.

Forecasting

Please refer to this DOCUMENT when forecasting to be sure the computer places students into their proper bands for next year.  If you have any questions come up regarding forecasting, please email me.

Volunteer Opportunity

On Saturday, March 4th, Cleveland will be hosting the PIL Solo and Ensemble contest. While the students organize most of the logistics of the day, FOCB will be providing hospitality during the event as well as a few key volunteer roles. We are searching for a parent volunteer who would be able to coordinate efforts that day

Responsibilities include the following:

  • planning session with Hospitality and Volunteer Coordinator to determine menu and volunteer needs
  • ensure all volunteer roles are identified and work with Volunteer Coordinator to fill them through a sign-up genius
  • be on site the day of the event
  • order and arrange delivery of pizza lunch for volunteers
  • order and arrange delivery of sandwich lunch for judges
  • drinks and snack availability
  • optional attendance of the February 6 board meeting
