Did you know that astronomers had already collected the first batch of data from the legendary James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)? How have these new results revolutionized our understanding of the Universe? Join the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC) at Stanford University on Jan. 30 for the last lecture in their JWST lecture series and learn about planets outside of the Solar System. Register today! This lecture is open to all but recommended for high-school students (or advanced middle-school students) and above.

Astronomy Talks at Foothill College are back in person!

On Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023 at 7 pm (PST), Dr. Andrew Siemion (U of California, Berkeley & SETI Institute) will give a free, illustrated, non-technical lecture entitled: “Our Boldest Effort to Answer our Oldest Question: The Breakthrough Listen Search for Intelligent Life Beyond Earth" in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College, in Los Altos (see directions below). The event organizers ask that attendees be vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 and wear a mask while indoors at the event. Extra masks will be provided. Thank you.

The talk is part of the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, now in its 23rd year. The lecture is co-sponsored by:

SEES Summer High School Internship
By: NASA and the UT Center for Space Research
For: Open to current high school Sophomores or Juniors ONLY. Visit their eligibility page for the complete details.

Where: Austin, TX
Registration/Tickets Required: Yes (Housing, meals, and activities will be provided. A limited number of travel scholarships to Texas are available.)
Deadline: February 20

Attention current high school sophomores and juniors! NASA and the UT Center for Space Research have joined forces to encourage high school students’ interest in STEM careers. Check out this fantastic opportunity at https://www.csr.utexas.edu/sees-internship/.

The SEES project offers distance learning modules and guided remote work prior to onsite internships at the University of Texas in Austin from July 8-22, 2023. Participants conduct authentic research while working with scientists and engineers in their chosen areas. Housing, meals, and activities will be provided. A limited number of travel scholarships to Texas are available.

Applications are due February 20.

-- Open to current high school Sophomores or Juniors ONLY (will be rising Juniors and Seniors) who have not worked as a SEES intern onsite previously.
-- Must be 16 by July 1, 2023.
-- Have a strong interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
-- Ability to complete on-line requirements prior to the on-site intern program.
-- Must be US citizen.
Virtual Summer Immersion & Self-Paced Programs 
By: Girls Who Code 
For: Girls and non-binary current high-school students, with or without prior coding experience
When: Program dates
Where: N/A -- Virtual
Registration/Tickets Required: Yes (FREE! and eligible students may qualify for grants and tech supplies)
Deadline: February 15th for priority consideration or March 24th for the general application deadline

Level up by becoming a coder this summer with Girls Who Code!
Choose your own adventure through their two free virtual programs and get the skills, network, and lifelong college and career support you need to change the world. All high school girls and non-binary students are welcome to apply, including past participants! 

In their 2-week Summer Immersion Program for current 9th-11th graders, you’ll join live virtual classrooms hosted by industry-leading companies like MetLife, Bank of America, and Accenture. By the end of the program, you’ll learn the fundamentals of game design, UX, the iterative design process, and more, as you build out a suite of short games using p5.js, a JavaScript library for creative coding. You can even apply for laptop and hotspot access and grants of $300 for financial support!

In their 6-week Self-Paced Program for current 9th-12th graders, you’ll learn to code through independent study and real-world projects. By the end of the program, you’ll earn beginner-level certificates of completion in HTML, CSS, or JavaScript for web development or intermediate-level certificates of completion in Python for cybersecurity or data science.

Interested in a hands-on learning experience at Berkeley Lab? Make sure you check Berkeley Lab K-12 STEM's website beginning in early February 2023. Program applications will be open for summer 2023 internship and camp positions. All programs are either free or a paid work-based opportunity. Students must live and attend schools in Northern California to participate.

SAGE is a (FREE!) STEM camp catered to high school students of underrepresented genders (women, trans, nonbinary, etc) hosted by 3 California National Laboratories:
-- SLAC in Menlo Park (near Stanford)
-- Berkeley Lab in Berkeley (near UC Berkeley)
-- Lawrence Livermore in Livermore and Tracy areas.

Berkeley ROAR Academy

Attention high school students! Applications for the Berkeley ROAR Academy are open, and they are also offering need-based financial aid.

ROAR Academy is a rigorous, intense two-week summer program designed for advanced high school students (entering 10-12) who have demonstrated an aptitude for academic and professional careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. In the past three years, Berkeley ROAR Academy has strived to provide a rich and integrated learning ecosystem for high schools, colleges, and beyond. Their top students have participated in the ROAR AI Racing competition, been awarded ROAR Ambassadors fellowship, and even attended Indy Autonomous Challenge.

Early Application Deadline: March 24, 2023
Applications are reviewed as they are received, so you are encouraged to submit your completed application as soon as possible. Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis.

Who should apply: Participation is limited to High School students who live in California and will be entering 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in Fall 2023. Students who will graduate before the start of Summer 2023 are not eligible.

Financial aid: For families who demonstrate financial need, the ROAR Academy awards full scholarships, and you do not need to submit an additional scholarship application.

Check out the pinned posts on B.A.T.S.'s Facebook and Instagram accounts for instructions and more information. Participants will be entered into a giveaway to win Berkeley Engineering stickers. (The entry deadline is January 31.)
Applications for Berkeley Lab K-12 STEM's Science en Acción (SeA) program, their (FREE!) bilingual STEM spring break camp, are open! Learn more and apply. Applications are due January 31!

This year the camp has been expanded to 4 days (April 5-8, 2023), with an extra day to explore the world-class facilities on-site at Berkeley Lab! The program is open to native Spanish-speaking students in 10th-12th grade. SeA is a free program. All materials and meals will be provided.

Activities include tours of Berkeley Lab facilities, career talks with scientists, and workshops both at Berkeley Lab and UC Berkeley. These events will be in English and Spanish. Participating in SEA can also be a step toward a summer internship at Berkeley Lab. More details are available on the program's website.
