Al Gore Explodes With Anger at the World Economic Forum

From WEF: The people who run our world are driving us towards global cataclysm. They need to raise the alarm and demand action NOW. FOX News is laughing at Al Gore, while other right-wing climate deniers are calling it an unhinged rant. Judge for yourself. Here and here. And here!

📌 Help Us Stop Woodfibre LNG! Write to Stephan Legault, Federal Climate Minister - By January 30th

From the Georgia Strait Alliance: Woodfibre LNG Project, a fracked gas terminal in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Howe Sound, will not only increase fracking and climate pollution in the area around Squamish and across BC, but now threatens to expose some marine mammals to dangerous amounts of underwater noise.

Write A Letter

📌 Urge Canada to Stop Woodfibre LNG From Harming Seals and Sea Lions - By January 30th

From My Sea to Sky: Woodfibre LNG wants to expose seals and sea lions to underwater noise that is equivalent to repeated shotgun blasts. Steller sea lions are listed as a species of "Special Concern" under the Species at Risk Act, and have only recently returned to Átl’ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound, a UNESCO Biosphere Region. Please take a moment to file a submission, by January 30th. You can find good text here and make your submission here (by patient, there are three steps).

📌 Finance Canada is Developing a Hydrogen Investment Tax Credit, Budget 2023 - By By February 3rd

From Environmental Defence: We are deeply concerned that the investment tax credit will be used to subsidize fossil-hydrogen technology, which is incompatible with Canada’s climate commitments, or inadvertently impact the availability of more cost-effective and reliable climate solutions. Our letter to Minister Freeland outlines these concerns. We are opening it up to ENGOs and academics. Can your climate organization add its name?

‘No Miracles Needed’: Prof Mark Jacobson on How Wind, Sun and Water Can Power the World

From The Guardian:  The Stanford University academic has a compelling pitch: the world can rapidly get 100% of its energy from renewable sources with, as the title of his new book says, “no miracles needed”. Wind, water and solar can provide plentiful and cheap power, he argues, ending the carbon emissions driving the climate crisis, slashing deadly air pollution and ensuring energy security. Carbon capture and storage, biofuels, new nuclear and other technologies are expensive wastes of time. Read more

📌 Saturday February 25th United for Old Growth Rally Update

Extreme Warming Ahead Even as Worst-Case Scenarios Grow ‘Obsolete’

From The Energy Mix: Early 2023 has been a rollercoaster ride for climate watchers: from relief that worst-case climate scenarios are no longer conceivable, to apocalyptic warnings that we could be headed for at least 7°C of warming, to hope that “super-tipping points” of climate action will soon galvanize rapid decarbonization, and concern that El Niño will return with unprecedented heat waves this year.  Read more

Sierra Club BC Loses Lawsuit on Climate Commitment Reporting

From The Tyee: A new ruling says the province only needs to update the public on shorter-term targets. Advocates say that’s not enough. Basran noted the government is not legally obliged to meet its climate goals and there are no penalties if it misses them. He said it was “disappointing” that B.C. was on track to overshoot its 2025 emissions target by two megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (producing a projected total of 57.5 megatonnes of CO2 equivalent that year) and would likely miss its 2030 targets too. Counting the Costs and Contradictions of the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion

From The National Observer: TMX would facilitate about 84 million tonnes (Mt) per year of CO2 emissions (upstream and exported). At $200 per tonne, that’s $16.8 billion annually in future damages. 84 Mt is substantially larger than B.C.’s current GHG emissions, equivalent to 11% of Canada’s annual emissions. The catch? Most of those emissions will be in other countries, not counted in Canada’s GHG inventory. Read more
