Wingecarribee Koala Habitat Restoration
Program

The Wingecarribee Shire is home to 10% of the NSW Koala population and the Southern Highlands Koala Conservation Project has been working with the community to help protect our koalas since 2014.

Funding is available to assist eligible landholders with increasing, connecting, or restoring koala habitat on their property.

On-ground restoration activities available for funding include:

  • Tree planting (including site preparation)
  • Weed control/Bush regeneration
  • Fencing
  • Purchase of seedlings

This project provides a unique opportunity for eligible landholders to manage their property for the benefit of koalas, other wildlife, and the broader ecosystem.

Eligibility will be considered based on a range of criteria, including:

  • Presence of koala habitat on your property and/or
  • Linkages to existing koala habitat adjacent to your property
  • Landholder’s demonstrated commitment to conservation and natural resource management
  • Landholder’s ability and willingness to maintain and monitor project sites

Koala karaoke 2022: That's a Wrap!

Our koala monitoring program "Koala karaoke" has wrapped up for a THIRD year in a row. We put little microphones out at 145 sites across the Southern Highlands to record koala calls and we've just sent off > 10, 000 hours of audio data to be analysed.

In 2021, there was a ~43% increase in koala occupancy compared to the previous year. Researchers suggest that increased rainfall and some recovery from drought conditions might be driving this trend. Stay tuned for more results later this year.

Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of our koala karaoke project looks like? The team ventures out to all corners of the shire to deploy these microphones.

Keep on Reporting Your Koala Sightings

Please make sure you report all your healthy koala sightings to the Southern Highlands Koala Project – via Facebook, 4868 0888 or citizen.science@wsc.nsw.gov.au. You are our eyes on the ground (or more likely tree tops) to find koalas in the Highlands. We have already received 300 community koalas sightings - so keep up the good work!

Our incredible Wildlife Carers are here to help if you find an injured or distressed koala (e.g. hunched over on the ground). You can reach Wildlife Rescue South Coast Inc on 0418 427 214 or WIRES on 1300 094 737. Please remember that these phone numbers are only for reporting sick koalas, not healthy koala sightings.

Keep in Touch!

The best way to get regular updates is on the Southern Highlands Koala Project's Facebook page in addition to these occasional Koala newsletters.

You can get in contact with the Southern Highlands Koala Project at any time with your questions or koala sightings: call 4868 0888 or email citizen.science@wsc.nsw.gov.au
