Kia ora March!

Tēnā koe <<First Name>>

I can't believe it's March already!  We are fortunate to have such lovely weather in Nelson Tasman.  I know many of us are thinking of loved ones and everyone up north who has been impacted from Cyclone Gabrielle.

This month's edition of the Manager of Volunteers newsletter includes:
  • Request from Nelson College to support students into volunteering
  • Help articles on Be Collective
  • Information from Volunteering New Zealand on Youth Week, an update on their Best Practice Guidelines, five wins for volunteering, and research on working with environmental volunteers and leaders.
  • Training opportunities.

Tips for Volunteer Management

Managing on Be Collective - Creating opportunities

Did you know that write up our volunteer opportunities on Be Collective and save them as a draft until you are ready to make them live to start recruiting?

Boards, are you starting to plan for when your current members leave?  We are often asked for support to find new board members, and sometimes the person has already vacated their role.

Vetting volunteers

What is your vetting process for potential volunteers in your organisation?

Consider the role they are applying for, the work and culture of the organisation, and any risks that may occur.  For example, will they be working with children?  Here is a link to an article from Volunteering New Zealand on vetting volunteers.

If your vetting process raises red flags, you could:
  •  talk it through with your team and make a decision,
  •  another role in your organisation,
  •  support them to find something suitable in another organisation, or
  •  refer the person to Volunteer Nelson or our online referral service
Youth Volunteer Week

Student Volunteer Week is typically held in April. We want to celebrate all youth and rangatahi who volunteer and contribute to communities. In 2023 we will pilot co-inciding this with New Zealand’s national Youth Week. Volunteering New Zealand will be collaborating with the peak body for youth development Ara Taiohi, the kaitiaki of this week.

What you have told us

Thank you to those who have done our survey. We have had 168 responses. You can still complete it here. Some findings include:
  • respondents are the most confident in their ability to select, attract, induct and support volunteers. They are least confident in addressing performance concerns and exiting volunteers.
  • respondents would most like help with addressing performance concerns and attracting volunteers.
  • 35% of respondents had received no volunteer management training in the past year while 26.8% had 1-4 hours.
  • The biggest reported challenges in the past year are: the need for more volunteers (29.8%), getting the right volunteers (22.6%) and more funding (15.5%)
  • Over 90% of respondents agreed with the evidence-based list of ten best volunteer management practices. Many suggested other useful practice areas.
This information will help inform the new Best Practice Guidelines and our advocacy and training. A full report will be written in the next month.
Five wins for volunteering in 2022

Have you taken stock of your achievements for the past year?

Alongside the successes volunteering brings to people and organisations, Volunteering New Zealand advocates for nationwide goals to improve volunteering for all. Before 2023 accelerates much faster, we’d like to share five wins for volunteering for 2022.

Research on working with environmental volunteers and leaders

Read about research presented at the Volunteering Australia Conference 2023 on environmental volunteerism. Of relevance to the current situation in New Zealand, it explores the critical role that volunteers play in conservation and addressing environmental challenges.
