ASSISTANCE DOGS NORTHWEST - January 2023
Our First "First Responder Facility Dog"!
Hudson was placed last month as a First Responder Facility Dog for the Poulsbo Fire Department. His handler and partner is Captain Jake Gillanders. This is the first placement of its kind and Hudson's job will be dual purpose. He will not only assist on-duty firefighters and EMS staff, but will also assist those they serve. First responders often experience PTSD or high stress after witnessing traumatic events. Hudson will be on duty every day to lift spirits and provide comfort and support.
Meet Our Veterinarian, Dr. Kiko Westerhout!
Kiko Westerhout, DVM, is the newest member of the ADNW team. We are so thankful for Kiko who has been volunteering her talents and time with health exams and general care for the dogs at our campus. Kiko has been in the Seattle area since 2000 and lives on Bainbridge Island. She is currently working at Urban Animal in downtown Seattle in emergency and critical care. She loves helping people and their pets!
"A Living Weighted Blanket"
Courthouse Dog Lucy graduated last September with handler and Program Director Scott Coleman. She is working at Safe Passage, the children's advocacy center in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Lucy's presence is making all the difference for the kids and staff. She is there to help child victims of crime throughout the legal process. Her specialty is making the kids feel safe and giving affection when they need it most. "She's a living weighted blanket", Scott says. You can read more about Lucy in the Couer d'Alene Post Falls Press here.
