Hi <<First Name>>,

Happy Friday and happy New Year!!

Welcome again to ADHD Matters where, once a month, I share some of what I'm reading (occasionally writing), watching, listening to; things I'm trying out or working on, and ADHD matters I'm just pondering.

I've listened to...

I've listened to many, many podcasts in 2022 and this one was the best, perhaps the best so far: "How To Achieve The Impossible with Steven Kotler" with Dr Rangan Chatterjee. So why am I so excited to share this with you?  It's about peak performance and finding your flow, something so close to my heart. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, one of the world's leading researchers on positive psychology, maintained that people are happiest when in a state he called "flow" - or what some might call being "in-the-zone." And flow looks a lot like hyperfocus!

This is one podcast you'll want to listen to. Here's a teaser from the full podcast: "BITE SIZE: How to find focus and avoid burnout with Steven Kotlter."

I'm working on...

I'm working on two things; the "10 minute rule" and building a "habit of completion". The first helps to start, and the second helps to finish.
  • The 10 minute rule: Often when faced with a big task, one with a lot of uncertainty, or one that is cognitively demanding (or all three) procrastination sets in. I'm working on a critical review of all academic papers on ADHD coaching intervention programmes. It's a big job, I'm not entirely sure how to go about it, and it's mentally demanding. I have been avoiding it with ninja-like stealth. So I’m taking some of my own medicine. I aim to start with working on it for just 10 minutes each day, at the start of the day. Today 10 minutes turned into an hour. Win!
  • The habit of completion: Too often we start a project with a very specific idea of what it should look like when done. Then get stuck when what we have isn't that perfect picture we initially imagined. And the project stalls. This newsletter is an example. I have a specific idea of what I think it should be, and every month I agonise over what I should include, and whether it matches what I initially envisaged. But what if I redefine the perfect picture?  Perhaps I don't need five things each and every month - perhaps three still delivers the value I wanted to create and share when I started this newsletter. The important thing is to get it done, to complete the project.
I'm pondering...

"Success is the sum of small efforts – repeated day in and day out.
– Robert Collier (no relation) :-)

And that's all folks. Just three from me this month - done beats perfect (or that's what I'm telling myself)!

Thanks for reading.

And as always, all feedback is welcome - just drop me an email. Which part of the newsletter did you enjoy the most or really resonated with you? What would you like to see more or less of? Any other suggestions? Let me know.

Have a wonderful weekend, and wishing you all the very best for 2023!!

Take care,

Philip
