Yellow Line Tunnel and Bridge Update

Starting the year strong, the team working on the Yellow Line has replaced more than 5,000 structural bolts in the inbound tunnel and has completed paint and rust removal operations, as well as prime painting in both the inbound and outbound tunnels.

With the priming complete, the team is now able to grout and caulk the curtain wall of the tunnel, which is a long-term, effective waterproofing method. As part of the process known as “curtain grouting,” grout is injected through small holes in the wall in a pattern to create an overlapping seal and barrier on the other side, which protects the structural integrity of the Yellow Line tunnel.

The team also installed more than 2,500 linear feet of fire standpipe on the Yellow Line bridge. The fire standpipe provides firefighters access points to water in the event of a fire emergency. To date, five of the eight sections of the fire standpipe installations along the bridge have been completed.
General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke visited the project in early January and thanked the team for their hard work and our customers for their patience as this necessary work is completed to ensure our system is ready for another 50 years of service.

Day in the Life of a Yellow Line Worker

Wondering what it’s like to work in the Yellow Line tunnel? Here’s a look at the sights and sounds the construction team experiences while working to repair this aging structure beneath the Washington Channel. Check it out here:

Potomac Yard Construction

The construction team is making progress on the Potomac Yard Station. Teams are installing the communications and security systems, the storm drainage and sanitary sewer piping, as well as working on the access road. In the coming weeks, crews will install fare gates, kiosks, and fare machines.

Last month, we announced a checklist for completion called the Path to Passenger Service. Stay tuned for more updates as we begin to check things off the list.
