New Nuclear Power Resources Launched!

As a part of our website relaunch, IPPNWC has released specific resources related to our Nuclear Power Committee’s work.

Comprised of board and active members, the Nuclear Power Committee, assists IPPNWC in its mission of education and advocacy. The group works to advocate for the end of nuclear power, educate others about the health and environmental consequences of nuclear power as well as to elucidate the connections between nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Its current work highlights the health implications of both the continued use and expansion of nuclear power. It provides information and advocacy to educate the public, physicians and policy makers. We see the decreasing share of energy that nuclear power provides globally as evidence of the continuing challenges that it faces in many domains, environmental, financial, security, health etc. Risks to health, the environment and the spread of nuclear weapons drive our concerns about nuclear power.

FROM THE DISARMAMENT COMMUNITY

Reflecting on the 2 Year Anniversary of Entry Into Force Day

On January 22, 2021 - following a decade of advocacy – nuclear weapons were officially banned! Two years ago, an overwhelming majority of the world’s nations adopted the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the first legally binding ban on nuclear weapons. The TPNW prohibits nations from developing, testing, producing, manufacturing, transferring, possessing, stockpiling, using or threatening to use nuclear weapons, or allowing nuclear weapons to be stationed on their territory. It also prohibits them from assisting, encouraging or inducing anyone to engage in any of these activities.

This is a landmark anniversary, but there is still more work to be done! The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons launched the cities appeal to help advocate for the ratification of the TPNW worldwide. Not sure if your city has signed the Cities Appeal yet? Check here

We are now 90 Seconds to Midnight

On January 24, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced that we are now 90 seconds to midnight - the closest to global catastrophe the world has ever been. The clock was created in 1947 using the imagery of apocalypse (midnight) and the contemporary idiom of nuclear explosion (countdown to zero) to convey threats to humanity and the planet. This year, the Bulletin unveiled that given the mounting dangers of the war in Ukraine and Russia’s threats of nuclear war.

In response to this announcement, IPPNWC president Jonathan Down released a statement:

“We are but 90 heartbeats away from a nuclear catastrophe. The prescription for our survival is the Ban Treaty” - Jonathan Down, IPPNWC President
