As the temperatures continue to drop, and that damn groundhog tells us there are six more weeks of winter, I want to remind everyone to take necessary precautions to stay safe and warm during these cold winter months.
Extreme cold weather can have serious consequences on our health, particularly for those who are elderly or have underlying medical conditions. I urge everyone to take the following steps to stay safe:
Dress in layers, wear a hat, gloves, and a scarf to keep your body and extremities warm;
Avoid prolonged exposure to the cold and stay indoors as much as possible;
Keep your home at a warm temperature, especially overnight;
Drive slowly – be mindful of icy roads and conditions; and
Check on your elderly or vulnerable neighbors to ensure they are safe and warm.
I also want to remind residents to be mindful of their safety when using heating sources such as fireplaces, space heaters, generators, and stovetops. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and maintain a safe distance from flammable materials.
In case of a power outage, have an emergency kit ready that includes a flashlight, extra batteries, food, water, and warm clothing. And reach out to ConEd at 800-75-CONED.
If you or someone you know needs assistance during this cold weather, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Town or community organizations for help.
Let’s work together to stay warm and safe this winter.
