Marion Slack to Receive Alumni of the Year Award

Marion Slack, PhD, '89 will be recognized for winning the College's Alumni of the Year Award on February 3.

Every year, the University of Arizona recognizes a group of alumni for their achievements, public service, advocacy for education, volunteerism and service to students, the colleges and the university.

Dr. Slack earned her Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1989 and stayed with the college as an adjunct lecturer, then a research scientist, and eventually a professor. She retired from the College in 2021 after 36 years of service.

Dr. Marion Slack is one of the most intelligent and inspiring people I have ever met," said Janet Cooley, PharmD, BCACP, associate clinical professor. "I have been lucky to work with Dr. Slack as a mentor and co-collaborator and seen how she has impacted the college and thousands of students by helping make statistics understandable and helping students ask important questions as they develop their own research projects."

Slack’s research focus was on the management of chronic pain as well as reducing bias in research design. As an instructor, she taught both undergraduate and graduate students, focusing on study design and coordination of students’ senior research projects.

"Dr. Slack modeled what it means to be an excellent professor in her research with the community, dedication to students, and commitment to the college," Cooley said.

Over the years, she supervised well over a hundred student projects and chaired or served on 55 graduate student committees. Slack endowed the Drs. Marion K. and Donald C. Slack Scholarship supporting five students each year.

Seminar | Targeting Biological Aging:
A New Paradigm for 21st Century Medicine

Tuesday, February 7 | 9-10 a.m.
Drachman B109 & Zoom | RSVP by February 1

Biological age is the greatest risk factor for nearly every major cause of death and disability, including COVID-19. Yet, traditional biomedical research and clinical approaches have focused on waiting until people are sick and treating individual diseases one at a time. Attempts to “cure” age-related diseases have proven unsuccessful, and the impact of “disease-first” approaches continue to be incremental.
