Hello Pointers!

This year, the School of Education continues to renew our commitment to excellence in all that we do with a resolute expectation that all students can learn and succeed. Framing our work within our Harju Center for Equity in Education vision, leveling the playing field for Wisconsin children, our work begins with preparing the best candidates for teacher education.

Not only are we focused on the preparation of the traditional undergraduate student, but we are also growing our graduate programs. We have created and implemented a new certification program for elementary education at the graduate level. Like our graduate-level special education program, our new program is ideal for those who have a non-teaching bachelor’s degree and want a career change to impact students or are teaching with a license with stipulations (emergency license).

Additionally, we are building strong and lasting relationships in rural districts surrounding our Marshfield branch campus. Building positive relationships between the UWSP campuses, surrounding school districts, community stakeholders, business and organizations that support communities, children, families and support education is key to accomplishing good things.

UWSP “showing up” and having a physical presence is our pathway to equity in education for all Wisconsin children. Trust, mutual respect and a desire to affect change with positive intent is how the UWSP School of Education manages our good work. We look forward to partnering with our stakeholders in these current, ongoing and future initiatives.

Students in Perry Cook's EDUC 385 - Teaching the Early Adolescent this winterim set up a stuffed animal drive and arranged for the class to visit the Stevens Point Fire Department in our back yard. Topics for the team leading our seminars and workshops were Exploratory and Service Learning at the middle level and as part of their service learning project, the students donated the stuffed animals you see here for pediatric patients that the fire department may respond to. Harju Center staff visits to Port Edwards School District

Harju Center
It was a trip back in time for members of our Harju Center Strategic Planning Committee as they toured Port Edwards School District. The UWSP group paged through yearbooks and visited classrooms where alumna Dorothea Harju taught for 25 years. We even ran into a few Pointer alumni who are current teachers in the district! The Harju Center for Equity in Education was established in 2019 thanks to a $5 million from her estate. The vision of the Harju Center for Equity in Education is to empower current and future elementary educators to recognize and address persistent challenges, close achievement gaps, and overcome barriers to providing equitable, inclusive, and responsive instruction to students. Our goal is to have positive impacts on Wisconsin schools and learners through supportive collaboration, innovation, and professional development.

Elementary Methods Block students gain experience in the district

EMB
School of Education students gain hands-on experience in the classroom even before student teaching through the Elementary Methods Block (EMB), a significant practicum experience in which elementary education majors spend seven weeks immersed in the Stevens Point Area Public School District under the direction of Prof. Perry Cook. Here's a glimpse of these students, their cooperating teachers and K-6th grade students at Washington Elementary. View Photos
