A mighty wind

It became gusty enough to cut short the “Surfing the Coast Guard Rip” paddle on Sunday, Jan. 29. Conditions began with sunny skies and a mild breeze. The formation of waves were happening in the bay. Conditions, though, deteriorated and the breeze turned into strong gusts. A retreat was called about an hour into the adventure. This area and can set up some great surfing … but not so much this day. Thirteen paddlers launched and thirteen paddlers returned — not without some challenges. There were assisted tows, a rescue, and a difficult slog against wind and current, and some surfing. The forecast versus actual observation can be contrary to each other or the timing may be different than expected. Everyone tackled these challenges using the skills they learned — thankful for working through the unexpected.
