Many thanks to everyone who came out to Over Under Bar to support the Junior League of Tallahassee and the success of our Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) campaign. Our wonderful guest bartenders Becca Piers, Sam Daniels, and Corie Stegall mixed up some fun drinks for everyone. All tips from this event support the League’s many local community projects such as Mighty Meals and Kids’ Boutique.

Until there is no break for food.

Did you know nearly 200,000 people in the Big Bend region, including 36,000 children, don’t have enough to eat? That's right — hunger is closer to home than you may think. JLT spent a Saturday morning packing backpacks with nutritious food for children in our community to eat over the weekends. We are continuing to fight hunger through our Mighty Meals event, which feeds families during spring break.
You can learn more about our event in this article from Tallahassee Magazine and how you can support this impacful program here.

This month, JLT members volunteered at TMH’s FarmShare event. The event provides food for households that are a part of the ALICE population. ALICE, which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, represents the increase in the number of individuals and families who work but are unable to meet their basic needs, including food, child care, housing, health care, and transportation. JLT members passed out 450 bags of groceries to families who attended the event!
This partnership operates through JLT’s Done in a Day (DIAD) program. If you have a short-term volunteer need that ties in with the JLT’s mission, you can learn more and fill out an application on our website.

JLT members gave a fresh start to Big Bend Homeless Coalition’s HOPE Community for the new year. Volunteers took down the holiday decorations and organized everything into seasonal storage. The organizational items the League purchased for BBHC allow for easier cleaning in storage areas, more flexible use of much-need space, and keeps items safe for use next Christmas. Many thanks to our HOPE Chairs Alexis Simoneau and Erin Condon for keeping us organized this new year!
Big Bend Homeless Coalition operates the only homeless shelter serving families in the greater Big Bend region. Daily, there are approximately 175 persons served, and a waitlist of 50 more families. BBHC also operates affordable housing and is the largest entity, outside of the VA, providing housing services to veterans in need in the Big Bend. Last year they provided housing assistance to over 300 veterans.

JLT kicked off the new year with our General Membership Meeting at Bricks & Brass. Members heard from our newest community partner Anna-Kay Hutchison, Community School Director at Sabal Palm Elementary, received updates and important announcements about League events, and spent some time catching up with fellow Leaguers. Members also put together 600 valentines treat bags for the children at Big Bend Homeless Coalition’s HOPE Community and Sabal Palm Elementary, a Community Partnership School.

JLT started the new year off right with fresh fruit and yogurt stocked in the teachers' and staff lounge at Sabal Palm Elementary. Members also celebrated our Sabal Palm students’ reading milestones by providing treats to students who met their goals for 2022. Congratulations to our readers and our wonderful teachers for inspiring and encouraging their students.

JLT volunteers partnered with Leadership Tallahassee Class 40 and volunteers from the FSU Center for Leadership & Social Change to help renovate and rebuild Patrick Avenue Townhouse Apartments. These apartments, operated by Big Bend Homeless Coalition, offer affordable apartments for low-income households with minor children.
A heartfelt thank you for all volunteer efforts during this project. BBHC will be able to move families in earlier than expected - by at least 30 days. JLT is proud to support BBHC and our members in Leadership Tallahassee’s current class: Katie Britt Williams and Tracy Eckles.

Our Sustainers had an enjoyable time together at Table 23 for the first JLT Sustainers happy hour of the new year. JLT recognizes the enormous talent and mentorship we have right here in our own community and value the involvement of our JLT Sustainers.
Our Sustainers started as volunteers in the League and have gone on to serve as leaders in other organizations in Tallahassee. They take what they have learned out into the community and demonstrate the effectiveness of trained volunteers on community boards of directors, school boards, in elected office, and on a variety of community, school, and church activities within their area of interest.
