What's New With Us
We have spent the whole month of January in the area around Ajo, Arizona. About a two-hour drive south of Phoenix.

This marks our 4th trip to the area. We thoroughly enjoy the laid-back vibe and lush green Sonoran desert landscapes. (Link to Previous Videos)

After we maxed out our 14 days of free camping on some public land west of Ajo, we stopped in at a local RV Park near the town of Why.
The town derives its name from the fact that two major highways, State Routes 85 and 86, originally intersected in a Y-intersection. At the time of its naming, state law required all city names to have at least three letters, so the town's founders named the town "Why" as opposed to simply calling it "Y."

I needed to install a new Furrion brand gas stove, so I wanted to be on electric power just in case my installation went awry, resulting in problems with the propane system.

Also, foul weather was moving in, plus I needed to do a big batch of laundry and give the RV waste tanks a good flushing after many weeks of boondocking.
I chose the Hickawan Trails RV Park. Nothing to write home about but decent electricity & water, sewer, plus a laundry room. Rates are $25 per night, $150 Weekly, or $400 monthly. We elected to spend a week. The park is mostly full of retired snowbirds taking advantage of the cheap rates or tourists using it as a base station to explore the surrounding area.

After the stove was successfully installed and chores were done, we really wanted to return to the BLM land near Ajo but needed to wait another week to obey the camping rules.
So I reserved a spot at the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument's Twin Peaks campground. A pristinely beautiful campground and only $20 per night.

We loved our time in Organ Pipe Cactus NM, once again hiking and driving around the vast park to drink in the remarkable landscapes. The park is home to more wildlife than one might expect in the desert. We spotted Gila Woodpeckers, Curved-billed Thrashers, Red Tail Hawks, Cactus Wrens, Silky Flycatchers, Mule Deer, etc. A big highlight was catching sight of a pair of bobcats as we drove by a wash.

To finish off January we're camping near Ajo again, in a different but equally beautiful campsite! Looking forward to longer and warmer days as we head into February. Stay tuned...
