Hello there!
As we work towards a more just and sustainable future, we must also acknowledge the intersectionality of race, class, and environmental injustice. From the Civil Rights Movement to the present day, Black people have been at the forefront of advocating for a healthier, more equitable planet. This Black History Month, we reflect on the past and present struggles of Black communities and recognize the immense contributions and leadership that Black people have provided in the fight for environmental justice.

Commentary: Social Science for Nuclear Energy

Social science research into nuclear energy is finally starting to find equal footing with hard-science research at the Office of Nuclear Energy.

Over the past two years, House progressives, appropriators, and the Energy Department under President Biden have started formally supporting social science research projects into nuclear energy. That support clears a path for students to study sociopolitical, anthropological, and communications questions about nuclear energy. In 2022, U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman (NY-13) championed legislation — enacted in the microchip and federal science package — enabling the Office of Nuclear Energy to support university scholarships and fellowships with research concentrations in nontechnical areas. Appropriators even underlined the importance of this assistance in spending legislation toward the end of 2022. These moves help put into practice one of Good Energy’s long-running priorities: supporting a sociotechnical approach toward the adoption of new nuclear technologies.

Meanwhile, under Assistant Secretary Katy Huff, the Office of Nuclear Energy is recognizing the role that social sciences can play in ensuring the equitable adoption of nuclear energy — and even funded three research projects last year focused on the social dimensions of nuclear adoption.
