Everyone knows what a library is. Or rather, everyone has their own idea of what a library is. It is usually thought to contain books, and librarians who lend you said books. But what else? From time to time there are threats to close a library when times get tough, and all of a sudden everyone rallies to keep the library open.
A well-educated society has a library. Even if you do not visit it, you want to have one in your vicinity. Much can be said to be the same with our university library. We have books, and librarians, but what else?

Well, there are tutoring sessions in information seeking and reference management, meetings with researchers, systematic reviews, help with publishing issues, seminars with researchers made available for the public and more. Not everyone comes in contact with all of what we do. And some only see the library as a beautiful building to spend some quiet time in between classes or when waiting for the bus. And that is ok, too.

In this issue of our newsletter Åsa gives you an idea of what goes on behind the scenes in publishing support. There are also tips on how to find open access articles and some insights to research contributions, and more.
As always, if you can’t find anything in this newsletter that excites you, please get in touch with us and tell us what you, and other researchers, would like to read about.

Best wishes,

We are KAU library

Åsa Möller has worked at Karlstad University since 2017 as part of the library’s research and publishing support. Åsa started working with publishing support and have also worked as a subject librarian, helping researchers and students with information searching and reference management. After the library’s organizational change in 2022 her main focus is publishing support, for example DiVA, publishing issues, Karlstad University Press etc. Åsa elaborates:

Before 2017 I worked as a librarian at a public library, where my main focus was library services for children and youth. There is quite a big difference working in a public library compared to a university library as you probably can imagine. But one thing is the same; the user-centered perspective. At the university library our main focus is supporting our students, researchers, teachers and other staff-members.
In my team, the library’s research and publishing support, we offer PhD students and researchers help and resources throughout the research process.
We frequently reflect on how we can make your job a little bit easier. So, if you have any questions or need help, don’t hesitate to get in contact with us. Remember, our job is to support you!.

Reworked PhD course: Information retrieval and publishing strategies

The course on information retrieval and publishing strategies for PhD students has been on a break during autumn 2022. The entire course was reworked by the library research- and publishing support in order to become better for both participants and teachers.

A reworked and updated course has been launched spring 2023 with new dates starting in March. The course is given in English in the spring and Swedish in the autumn. Don’t worry if you missed it this semester, there are more chances ahead.

A DiVA reminder

Are you aware that you don't have to register your published paper in DiVA if the journal or conference proceeding is indexed in either Scopus or Web of Science? We import records from these databases directly to DiVA, on a weekly basis. To check whether your journal is indexed in the databases, please follow the links below:

Meet a researcher

Sometimes it is hard to keep track of all the great research that happens within our university. One initiative to make it easier to learn what your colleagues are up to or to tell them a bit about your own research is ´Meet a Researcher' ("Möt en forskare"). It is an open seminar series where staff, students, and the general public can listen to and discuss with KaU researchers who present their research findings in a popular scientific way.

Keep a look out on our calendar for the next researcher who takes the floor.

Do you want to present your research and be one of the researchers to meet? Please contact Irina Persson.

Forskningspodden - a podcast focusing on research at KAU

Have you listened to our podcast yet? In our research podcast “Forskningspodden” we talk to researchers who have recently defended their licentiate or doctoral thesis. The podcast is a chance for you as a researcher to listen to other researchers talking about their work and also a chance to reach an audience in a more relaxed setting.
At the moment, we have 104 episodes published.
You can listen to our podcast here.

We invite all new licentiates and doctorates to be a guest on Forskningspodden. Keen to know more?
Contact Magnus Åberg.

Find open access articles - with plugins

The transition to open access has provided us with easy access to a lot of research material. Still though, not all research is open and free, and it can sometimes be tricky to know if there is some way of getting hold of the journal article or conference paper. Thankfully, plugins to your web browser can help you find and download the paper more easily. Learn more about these aids here

Update on open access agreements

Some of our open access agreements have been up for renegotiation, and some have been renewed. The agreements mean that you as a researcher at Karlstad University can publish open access for free or at a discounted price. Read more about our agreements here.

We also recommend you using the search tool Scifree, a service that lets you search for your favorite journals and also provides instant information on the financial support available for each journal. Via Scifree you can also get more information on the specifics of the agreement the journal is included in.
