Dear Friend,

We hope our email finds you well!

It may be a brand new year, but if there's one thing that will never change, it's our commitment to compassion and excellence for your companion animals. As pet parents ourselves, we know what it's like to experience the love, joy and responsibility that comes with caring for our furry family members. Thank you for entrusting the care of your little ones to us: it is a trust we don't take lightly.

As we welcome another month that promises to be just as full of interesting cases and fulfilling new challenges, here's a quick look back at some interesting events that occurred over the last few months at Raintree, as well as some helpful tips and tricks for pet parents...

2022: A Year of Collaborations
From working with a neurosurgeon to save a little puppy's life, to performing cardiac surgery on a senior dog alongside a cardiothoracic surgeon, 2022 was an incredible year that brought with it exciting new collaborations. Irrespective of species, history, ownership or time of day, every time that a new case is brought to us, our primary concern has always been: "What is the best course of action for this animal?" Sometimes, the answer comes in the form of reaching out to specialists across various fields and working together to help ensure the patient receives the absolute best care.

We are immensely grateful to the amazing doctors (veterinary and human medicine alike), technicians, pet parents, and tenacious patients who make these uplifting recovery stories possible.

"Alone, we can do so little; Together, we can do so much."
Here's how a puppy named Ryott overcame a potentially life-threatening situation with the help of a human neurosurgeon and our dedicated team.

Let's Talk about Pancreatitis

In this issue of our Did You Know? series, we're spreading awareness about pancreatitis, a serious condition that can affect both dogs and cats.

Based on the clinical signs listed above, diagnostic tests (such as thorough ultrasound scans) are typically performed to confirm or rule out pancreatitis. Your veterinarian may also conduct bloodwork and check for physical symptoms such as abdominal pain.

At Raintree, we also conduct a more specific test for dogs called the SNAP cPL Test, which shows pancreas-specific lipase levels. We then correlate these results with clinical signs and ultrasound findings, which is how we reach a definitive diagnosis. Routine screening and early detection can be crucial, so please be sure never to miss a routine appointment with your vet.
Emergency Surgery, 800 Kms Away!
Colic Surgery for a Horse 800 km away!
When we say our love for animals knows no bounds, we mean it! Carlson the horse lives all the way in Bhopal. He was suffering from a stomach ache (colic), which can turn serious for horses. When medical therapy did not help alleviate his condition, it became clear that this was a surgical colic. As Carlson's condition deteriorated with every tick of the clock, his owners spared no expense for their boy and flew our equine specialist team to Bhopal for emergency surgery. We are so happy to share that Carlson recovered well and is no longer in pain or discomfort!
When Curiosity Might Take a Dangerous Turn...
So your pet ate something they really shouldn't have... what happens next?

When an animal consumes an object that cannot pass through the gastrointestinal tract, that object is considered a foreign body. While sometimes, foreign bodies can pass through the gastrointestinal tract with little consequence, other times, they may need emergency veterinary intervention. Watch this video to see how we extracted bits of plastic and a pair of spectacles from Newton, a too-curious Golden Retriever!
CT Scans for Pets
Did you know that animals may need CT scans, too? Depending on your pet's medical condition, your primary veterinarian may recommend additional diagnostics such as a CT. Here's an inside peek at what happens when a Raintree patient undergoes a CT scan!
Towards a Rabies-Free Pune... One Shot at a Time!

Every year on Republic Day, we conduct a free Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ARV) Drive to help vaccinate the community dogs and cats that live in and around our neighbourhoods. This is done through our small but determined Friends of Blue initiative, which aims to support stray/rescued animals in need. Our ARV Drive is one of the longest traditions we've had at Raintree, and it is by far our favourite event of the year!

While rabies is a lethal disease once contracted, it can be prevented through timely vaccinations. Ensuring the animals around us are vaccinated is one great way to help make our neighbourhoods safer, kinder and happier for both people and animals alike! Thank you to the wonderful feeders and guardians who reach out to us every year to ensure the stray animals they care for are vaccinated on time. Here's a quick glimpse into our 2023 ARV Drive.

How a Single Blood Donation Could Help Save a Life...

As an emergency room that attends to a number of critical cases throughout the day (and night), we often need blood transfusions to help critical patients. As difficult as it is to say this, a timely transfusion could spell the difference between life and death for these dogs. The last few months have seen a number of serious cases ranging from ruptured spleens and accidents to critical bouts of tick fever. Although the blood donation process is a quick and safe process for the donor, much like human blood donations, a transfusion depends on whether the donor is a match for the recipient. Sometimes, patients may luck out and find a match very quickly; other times, finding the right donor can be a literal race against time. Each time, however, we are constantly amazed by the resilience and generosity of our blood donors and their families.

Pictured above is Kabir, one of our wonderful volunteers who donated blood to help a fellow patient. If your dog is healthy, up-to-date on their vaccinations, does not have a history of tick fever, and weighs over 25 kgs, please consider joining our volunteer canine blood donor list -- your little one could help make a huge difference in another animal's life!
