Absentee Ballots:

From All Saints' bylaws:
Voting Members should attend the Annual Meeting if at all possible. In those rare instances where Voting Members are not able to attend the annual meeting, absentee ballots will be made available through application to the Rector or to the Rector’s designee. The Church Office will mail an absentee ballot to the Voting Member requesting it, together with a return envelope addressed to the Registrar. The Church Office will maintain a record of the absentee ballots sent out, and will provide this list to the Registrar at the Annual Meeting. Absentee ballots must be received by the Registrar prior to the Annual Meeting and will be counted by the Tellers on the first ballot and as long as a nominee remains in contention for the office.

Voting Members. Every person not less than 16 years of age who has been a Member of this Church for at least one year preceding the day when he or she may wish to vote, and who shall have been, for the period aforesaid, a communicant member in good standing and enrolled as such in the records of this Church, shall be a Voting Member thereof, with the right to vote in the election of Vestry members and upon all other matters having to do with the affairs of the Church at congregational meetings.

The Episcopal Church defines “Communicants in Good Standing” as  Members of the Parish who for the previous year have received Holy Communion in The Episcopal Church at least three times, have been faithful in corporate worship, unless for good cause prevented, and have been faithful in working, praying and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God and are financial contributors to the Parish of record.

If you are eligible to vote, cannot attend the Annual Meeting, and wish to vote by absentee ballot, please contact the Interim Rector by phone (301-663-5625) or email arichter@allsaintsmd.org by Tuesday, February 7 to request a ballot. Resurrecting the Rice Bowl!!
Many parishioners may remember the Rice Bowl project that was held during the Lenten season for a number of years at All Saints’. Since the start of the pandemic, we had to put a pause on this effort. We believe this is a good time to resurrect this project. For those of you not familiar, the Rice Bowl project is a fund-raising campaign held during Lent (starting February 26 through April 2). All the funds collected for this effort are directed toward a specific charitable organization. We alternate between a local charity one year and an international charity the following year.

Since we do this during Lent, we ask that you forego something during the week that you would spend money on and donate what you would have spent to the Rice Bowl. Heading to Starbucks to get a $5.00 latte? Give that up and donate that $5.00 to the Rice Bowl. Headed out for lunch? Maybe consider brown-bagging that day and donate what you would have spent to the Rice Bowl. This practice fulfills both the sacrificial and almsgiving elements to our Lenten spiritual practices.

This year we've chosen "Drop In The Bucket" to receive funds collected. This organization builds water wells in African villages that don't have access to clean water. Not only do they build the wells, but also educate and train the local villagers on maintenance and repair of the wells to insure continuity of water availability long after the well is constructed. Current cost to build a well is $7,000.

If you have any questions about this effort, please contact Cathy Guzauskas cathy09271@comcast.net or Linda Miller, Outreach coordinator at All Saints’. We are excited to bring this effort back to life and we ask that you prayerfully consider supporting this project.

Outreach Ministry in India

Students gather for study time. Can you find Sudha sitting on the floor with the children?
John leads a memorial service for two church members who recently died.

Several days ago, John, Sudha, and their son, Roshan, traveled by overnight train from Hyderabad to Ponnur. While in Ponnur they attended a memorial prayer service for two church “matriarchs”  who had recently died.

Sudha took two people to the doctors, paying for their visits and for medicine. Most of the families connected with Bright Beginnings are not able to afford health care.

Any contribution you could make to Outreach in India via Tithe.ly or check would be used to support Bright Beginnings Learning Center. There is now a drop down line on Tithe.ly for Outreach in India. Checks may be written to All Saints’ Episcopal Church. In the memo line please write: “Outreach – Mission in India”.

Thank you to those who have already and are continuing to contribute! Your generosity is having a huge impact on the lives of children and their families.

Total monthly cost to run Bright Beginnings is $1300. $1100 of this amount comes from All Saints’ outreach funds. These funds are used to purchase food and materials for the 63 students, salaries for the cook and teachers, electricity, maintenance, medical expenses, and rent for extra classroom space.

There are currently 20 students on the waiting list. Might you, as an individual or a family, be willing to support this life giving ministry by sponsoring a student for 2023? The cost would be $20 monthly, which could be paid by check or via Tithe.ly.

Donate to Bright Beginnings in India
We pray with John and Sudha every Saturday at 8:00 am. You are invited to join us on Zoom as we pray with and for John and Sudha.

The Getting Ahead Program

The Getting Ahead program is partnering with local organizations and churches to facilitate a 16-week “kitchen table style” program to help people stabilize their situations and build resources to improve their lives.  The goal for the participants (investigators) is self sufficiency in all parts of their lives.

The Getting Ahead Program is managed by the ERUCC, supported by many organizations including All Saints' who prepare, serve meals and pack up leftovers for the investigators and children, to take home with them.

Approximately 25 volunteers and 3 ministries from All Saint's volunteered this last session. (with others wanting to be part of the next session).

A very conservative estimate for one entree, snacks, a salad or side and dessert provided per meal is $37 per session.

ERUCC says that they "are amazed and humbled that people are taking time out of their busy lives to do this for people they do not even know.  We are grateful for the commitment of your members to helping these individuals improve their quality of life."

We now have openings for February 2. If you would like to volunteer to cook part or all of a meal, provide snacks or desserts, please contact Katy Ackland at kackland921@aol.com or Laura Hammond at lauralucia00@gmail.com.

Did you know…..

(from the Advocate’s website)

In the 1980s a group of individuals and organizations led by All Saints Episcopal Parish, Frederick, Maryland partnered and worked together to address the growing homeless rate for families in the community. The outcome of their admirable efforts is the founding of Advocates for Homeless Families in 1988, an organization that has successfully impacted the lives of several hundred families who otherwise may not have had the support and resources to overcome their homelessness.”

Would you like to know more about the mission and programs of Advocates for Homeless Families, Inc? All Saints member, Dan Huebner, is currently serving on their Board of Directors. If you’d like to know how to become more involved please reach out to Linda Miller- lindy205@verizon.net and I’ll connect you with Dan.

When you hear or see a call for volunteers, are your immediate thoughts: I have nothing of value to offer…there are other people more qualified than me…serving will require time or skills I don’t have…I’ll get assigned to a task I don’t enjoy? If any of these concerns apply to you, All Saints' has you covered. We are looking to identify parishioners who possess skills or knowledge in several areas that will enhance our stewardship for our buildings and grounds. We are looking for parishioners who have familiarity with HVAC, IT, plumbing, electrical wiring, carpentry, roofing, +….. and use this in-house expertise to help in assessing whether acute issues involving our facilities could be handled with available volunteers or should be referred to our commercial vendors. Please note if you have skills not mentioned above that you feel would benefit All Saints', we’d love to hear from you too! This compilation of in-house trade knowledge would provide both a valuable and reassuring resource of counsel to the Rector and Junior Warden when issues occasionally arise.

Please contact Mark Walker, marwalk@gmail.com, if you are interested in sharing your knowledge or have any questions, comments or suggestions regarding this important stewardship opportunity.
