Can a Blind Person Use Meetup?
Initially, Meetup was location-based and focused on in-person events. Now, it allows users to add a link for meeting virtually. Just like with any new innovation, the first thing that a blind user asks is “Will I be able to use it?”

Accessibility Tips

Tactile Graphics and Objects

Tactile graphics and objects make it possible for people with disabilities — such as folks who are blind or low vision — to touch an item to understand what it is and what it looks like.

Equal Entry's Thomas Logan and Meryl Evans met with Lauren Race at NYU Ability Project. Lauren covered the key things to consider when designing tactile graphics.
  • Hollow objects are often more discernible than solid ones
  • Keep it to one graphic per page
  • Provide 1/4-inch breathing room between elements
  • Insert a triple slash in the upper right corner for page orientation OR cut the upper-right corner piece as the image shows a missing corner piece
We took the "Progress Over Perfection" logo and created two tactile versions: one solid and one with the words outlined. It was noticeable how much easier it was to discern the logo when it was hollow instead of solid as in the following image.
