Mission News

I’d like to thank our dear secretary, Cindy, for the new mission board at church. Please stop and see all the information on it. If you have ever wondered what we do with your mission money, it’s all there in black and white. Also, you can see what missionaries we support if you don’t already know.

Cindy is also highlighting Camp Aldersgate because it’s that time of year to grab a brochure and think about when you’d like to send your children to camp. Summer Camp 2023 registration is now open! Learn more

As of Jan. 14, Ken Keyes was finished with his radiation therapy. He was to get 3 weeks of rest and then if blood tests and MRIs show all is well, he will be put onto a cycle of 5 days of oral chemo and then 23 days off. That will continue for 12 cycles. They thank us for our prayers as Ken has done well with the doses of chemo so far. Ken and Kathy are taking a personal leave of absence from Wycliffe right now because Ken’s mental stamina ebbs and flows. He is continuing to encourage the mountain translators and new team mates, though. Ken and Kathy praise God for each day that He gives.

We are sponsoring 6 elementary students in Choluteca, Honduras, so that they have uniforms and books to go to school. Angie Overholt hasn’t sent me their pictures, yet, but I’ll display them on a bulletin board when she does.

Our Random Acts of Kindness mission has mostly been working with the Helping Hands group in Carroll County. Especially when they need a ramp built or installed they call Lynn Dunlap and he rounds up some helpers to install it. Other times our help to people has been in the form of outside yard work and we found some awesome teenagers to help us. We’re going to put a new sign up sheet on the table outside the sanctuary if you would like to sign up to help. This sign up is just for workers – not to supply food. Thank you for considering helping with this ministry.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Training
Youth Mental Health First Aid training will be offered by Dover First United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 25th from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The training teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adolescents ages 12-18. You'll build skills and confidence you need to reach out and provide initial support to young people who are struggling. You'll also learn how to help connect them to appropriate support.

AFTER THE COURSE, YOU'LL BE ABLE TO:

  • Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).
  • Recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
  • Understand how to interact with a young person in crisis.
  • Know how to connect a young person with help.
  • Better understand trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying.

Please join us March 5 from 2:00-3:30pm at The Yellow Brick church for a spiritual formation workshop, "How to Make Space for God", led by Kara Farkus. Sign-up sheets are available at both locations.
Justified Youth Group
Justified Youth made the jump from Wednesday evenings at Yellow Brick to Sunday's at 11:30 at the Bridge.  The rationale was to keep our young drivers from winter driving in the dark, as well as to make it easier for some of the youth that attend the Bridge to just stay for lunch and a study.  So far the change has been a positive one.  We have gained a couple more youth with the possibility of more.

We began a study using Francis Chan's book, "Crazy Love".   To this point we have read and discussed God's majesty and how that plays into our prayer life.
A Letter from Ken Keyes
A card was received from Ken & Kathy Keyes. The Keyes family received the church's special Christmas offering. For updates about Ken's journey, visit https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kenkeyes

Dear Friends at First United Methodist,
Thank you for your very generous gift! We were overwhelmed! This really helps out, as we are able now to pay on some expenses, and also to spread your generosity to others, who are needy.

We fondly remember our last visit to you in 2019. We were impressed with your outreach in the community!

I suppose our main prayer is for the eradication of the cancer, and restoration of health and stamina. We are working with a young American couple in Central Asia, whom we are helping with linguistic translation and I should say, key contacts in the language community. Please do pray for smooth cooperation. As for my other work, we see people using, and benefitting from the videos for training in Bible Trans. Software (see Paratext.org for details).

Kathy is busy as she cares for me, and runs the household. Our boys, Peter and Max are thriving in their college lives. Praise God!

May the grace of our Lord be with you all.
Love in Christ, Ken and Kathy Keyes
