Matthew Hyleck Named Executive Director of Baltimore Clayworks 

Matt became Baltimore Clayworks’ Interim Executive Director in September 2022, and has managed the Education Program since 2000. He holds a B.F.A. in Ceramics from Xavier University and has a broad knowledge of the field of ceramics. Matt maintains a studio practice and is a highly accomplished ceramic artist who has the respect and admiration of his colleagues in clay and in the Baltimore community at large. He has a reputation for artistic excellence in his work that has built his reputation nationally and internationally.   

“I am both humbled and excited to have this opportunity to further the mission of Baltimore Clayworks and to continue advancing our passion for ceramic arts”, says Matt Hyleck. “It goes without saying; Baltimore Clayworks has played a significant impact on my life over the past 22 years. It remains my goal for the organization that we continue to thrive as a creative community while keeping ourselves focused on our core values and demonstrating those values on a daily basis through our program actions. We are privileged to have a dedicated core staff, a talented class of resident artists, a fully engaged Board of Directors, tremendously gifted teaching artists and a fabulous community of supporters.  As we begin the visioning process in preparation for our 45th anniversary, it's hard not to be excited about the future for Baltimore Clayworks”. 

As Executive Director, Matt will manage all day-to-day operations of Baltimore Clayworks. In collaboration with a dynamic and energetic staff, he will lead the organization in all of its activities including all programming, and fundraising, marketing, and community engagement initiatives.   

“Matt has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to the organization and the community it seeks to serve. His values and performance validate the Board of Directors' choice of Matt to lead Baltimore Clayworks into the future as its executive director,” says Founding Director Deborah Bedwell.

Summer Camp 2023 is here!

This summer, we are offering TEN WEEKS of full-day camps for children ages, 6-10, 10-12 and half-day camps for teens ages 12-16! All camps are for one week and run Monday through Friday. Class fees include all materials and firing.

Long-term Artists Residencies (1-3 years)

Our long-term residencies offer early to mid-career artists the opportunity to develop their work in a dynamic community environment for one to three years. The selection of residents is highly competitive and based on artistic excellence, potential for growth, strength of proposal, and a commitment to building a clay-oriented community. Awarded to all early to mid-career artists who have completed either undergraduate and/or graduate degrees, or have equivalent years of experience. Residencies start in September, and benefits include:

• Semi-private, 10’ x 12’ studio space
• Firing and materials fees at cost
• Paid opportunities to teach classes on and off site
• Invitation to sell work in The Shop, Baltimore Clayworks’ retail space
• Promotion through social media/mailing lists/onsite events
• $250 firing stipend

Responsibilities:

• 7 hours a week working as a Program Assistant

Lormina Salter Fellowship (1 year)

Awarded to one emerging artist producing work of the highest quality. Includes the same benefits and responsibilities as long-term Resident Artists plus:

• $1,200 annual materials stipend
• Solo exhibition in our Main Gallery

EMBARC Fellowship (1 year)

Founded in 2021, EMBARC (Emerging Maryland BIPOC Artist Residency in Ceramics) seeks to center the experiences and talents of Maryland based BIPOC artists. Awarded to an artist who identifies as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color. Must be a resident of Maryland for at least 1 year prior to application submission date. Includes the same benefits and responsibilities as long-term Resident Artists plus:

• $500 materials/firing stipened
• Solo exhibition in our solo gallery

Mary E . Nyburg Fund for Artist Development Application Open!

Following Mary's death in April 2006, a fund was created in her honor to award a $1,500 stipend each year to allow a period of devoted study that would deepen an artist’s work in clay and also strengthen the Clayworks community. The stipend, awarded to one Clayworks’ artist annually helps support travel, study and/or working in another community outside of Baltimore. On return the artist is required to make a presentation to the Clayworks’ community about their experience.   

AWARD AMOUNT: $1,500 
APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 18, 2023, 5:00 pm (EST) 

Eligibility: This award is open to any Baltimore Clayworks artist. This includes Associate artists (formerly member artists), Resident artists, Program Alumni, Visiting artists, Teaching artists, Springboard members, artists that are Baltimore Clayworks Members and artists that are Volunteers of Baltimore Clayworks. Priority is given to artists who are currently active in the Clayworks’ community. Artists who make functional as well as sculptural work are encouraged to apply.  

Selection Panel: Four friends and family members of Mary’s who are members of the Nyburg Fund Committee review the applications and select the recipient. Judges will consider both the images and the strength of the written proposal for the use of funds. The recipient will be required to sign a grant agreement that will state the terms of the stipend. In the event that funds are awarded and not used, the stipend must be returned to the Mary E. Nyburg Fund for Artist Development.
