We were able to cherry-pick these top offerings from two of the Wachau's finest producers. Availability is very limited. Gruner at this level is an extraordinary and unique wine.

Prager is a leading Wachau producer and run by Toni Bodensteinknown who is known for his meticulous attention to terroir and understanding of the nuances between different vineyard sites. Prager’s style produces wonderfully complex wines that are both powerful and tense at the same time.  High-density planting and long hang times ensure ripe fruit flavors and concentration, with vibrant aromas and a mineral streak that runs through the palate.

"Toni Bodenstein's collection of (Prager) Riesling and Grüner Veltliner Smaragds set the benchmark. There are world class wines amongst them, true classics of which we will still sing in 20 or 30 years. Weingut Prager has probably bottled the finest Achleiten Veltliners I have ever tasted." -  Stephan Rheinhardt, The Wine Advocate

Josef Jamek, the “Doyen” of the Austrian wine scene, was a trailblazer in producing dry, varietal wines in the 1960s. The Jamek family continues his philosophy of producing easy-to-drink, naturally-made wines, blending tradition with modern techniques and a respect for nature. Jamek wines are versatile companions for various foods.

Arriving in April.

Prager Gruner Veltliner Ried Zwerithaler Smaragd 2016
$85 per bottle
95 points Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Zwerithaler is very clear, pure and flinty on the deep and coolish nose. Macerated for four hours and kept on the lees until February, this is a juicy, dense and round, silky-textured and elegant Veltliner with lingering salinity and a tensioned yet finessed finish. Very precise and coolish—a great 2016. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.”

Prager Gruner Veltliner Ried Zwerithaler Smaragd 2018
$85 per bottle
95 points Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "From a very small plot owned by the Stift Melk and planted in 1907/08, the 2018 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Ried Zwerithaler Kammergut offers an intensely fruity but clear, deep and flinty nose. This is rich and round on the palate, with intense and concentrated fruit but maybe a lack of acidity and the purity of the other Veltiners, although it has a firm tannic structure. Very long and in a very fine way powerful. Tasted at the domain in September 2019.”

Jamek Gruner Veltliner Ried Liebenberg Smaragd 2020
$45 per bottle
96 points Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "Tasted as a tank sample in June 2021 a few days before bottling, the 2020 Ried Liebenberg Dürnstein Grüner Veltliner Smaragd offers an opulent but clear and remarkably refined bouquet of elegant white fruits intertwined with flinty as well as lemon zest notes. Crystalline and vital on the palate, this is a full-bodied, round and intense but also piquant and enormously juicy Liebenberg that is very elegant and balanced, with fine mineral grip, lingering salinity and delicate, stimulating bitters. It's pretty silky for a gneiss terroir, but if this is due to a higher limestone content: who knows? 13.5% alcohol.”

Jamek Riesling Ried Klaus Smaragd 2020
$65 per bottle
97 points Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate: "Tasted in June 2021 as a tank sample that is ready for bottling, the 2020 Ried Klaus Weissenkirchen Riesling Smaragd is a generous and concentrated grand cru that opens with a dense and aromatic but also stony/mineral and enormously flinty bouquet that reminds me a bit of the Forster Kirchenstück in the Pfalz yet has characteristic sugared/candied lime and lemon aromas. Full-bodied and fresh, with crystalline acidity, this is a highly complex, iodine-laced and tensioned Klaus with an amazingly fresh and aromatic finish. The wine will be available in September but should be cellared at least for 12 years. Even more important: Buy enough, because this will go for decades. 14% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in June 2021.”
