SUNDAY BLAST
February 19, 2023

Greetings, Happy Michigan Wolverines. What an evening. Michigan 84, MSU 72. Now, for Monday’s luncheon.

Doors open at 10 am at Weber’s. Menu: Pan Seared Chicken or Beef Tips, Au Gratin Potatoes and Vegetable Medley. You’ve probably noticed by now that the vegetables are not mushy! And we can’t have mashed potatoes every week, even though some of you prefer them. I like them myself only with a bit of gravy, and that’s not going to happen. Our Men’s Basketball speaker will be Jaaron Simmons, current video analyst and former player on the 2018 Final Four Team. I’m sure you will have lots of questions for Jaaron. Our second speaker is Woman’s Lacrosse, Hannah Nielsen. The team is coming back from a great win over Harvard. Admission is free to women’s games and attendance has been very good.

Now, THE game. Men’s Basketball provided a wonderful evening for our fans. I’m sure folks didn’t quite know what to expect from the students and all the parents who were indeed in a state of shock. What does a school do when there’s an event scheduled soon after a tragedy so close to home? The University of Michigan came through with compassion and love. We showed respect to the fans and to the team. The display by our students was very touching, they really were concerned. And then, the game. Both teams were out to win, and they were neck and neck for most of the time. Dug McDaniel had a career high of 18 points, Kobe Bufkin scored 17, and Hunter Dickinson scored 14 points. Tarris Reed, Jr. had a career-and-team best of 10 rebounds. The team really seemed to click. The heart-stopping finish was the last part when Michigan ended the game on a 12-0 run, holding MSU scoreless for the final 2.29. Makes you want to come back for more.

We were all happy to see John Beilein and his winning team. The players looked great and they all had an opportunity to speak. The former players in attendance all were recognized as well. And there’s Lloyd Carr, also looking great. He had some good things to say about the Ann Arbor MClub and how he enjoyed attending our meetings. We miss him, too.

Women’s Basketball was not so successful in Indiana, with another lost to an excellent Indiana team. Michigan isn’t done yet. Monday night against OSU. Come out and give them your support. You can bet their OSU fans will be in attendance. The season is fast drawing to a close. Why not come out and see what it’s all about.

Michigan Wrestling drew a good crowd for dollar day this afternoon. When I left, they were winning against CMU. The Big Ten Tournament is March 4 and 5 and the lower bowl is already sold out, so if you’re a wrestling fan, you had better hurry.

The Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Meet this past week was a huge success with ten teams competing. Michigan came in third and took one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Katie Crom took home the gold in the 200-yard butterfly and was named the Freshman of the Meet. If you haven’t been to a swim meet, the men’s teams begin on Wednesday but be prepared for a great event and lots of NOISE!

The Men’s Hockey team was unsuccessful against OSU over the weekend; they will be back in action this weekend against Notre Dame. Standing room only.

Okay, I’m out of space and it’s getting late. See you on sunshine Monday. Go Blue.
