How High Are You Flying?

Dear Reader

The next gauge we're going to discuss in the cockpit of the plane, as we fly through our day, is the altitude gauge.
We've discussed the altitude and the attitude gauges, and how they work together. But, you know, the altitude gauge is probably one of the most important gauges that the pilot watches throughout the day. The pilot needs to know at what height the plane is flying at all times. Air traffic control will tell the the pilot where to fly - what direction and what height to keep the plane safe. This keeps you on course and makes sure that you don't have collisions with other planes.

The moment the altitude gauge starts coming down, maybe there's something wrong with the plane and it starts losing altitude, the pilot gets really concerned and really involved. He or she then has to come up with a plan of what to do next, has to tell air traffic control and perhaps even find a place to land.

Because, if you run out of altitude, you're going to crash.

The analogy for us, flying through our day, is that we also need to know where we are in relation to the joy line.

It's natural and normal for us to be triggered throughout the day, to succumb to a negative emotional state and to go below the joy line. It's also important for us to realize this is actually happening; realize that this is a place where we shouldn't be camping out, because if you're in a negative emotional state, you need to learn to shift your mindset,  turn it around and lift yourself above the joy line again.

In future episodes we'll speak about how you can do this. I’ll offer some techniques that will help you with this. But, for this episode, what we need to know is that when we're below that joy line, and that specific place, we need to always be aware of it and we need to make sure that we don't get stuck there.

So, there you have it. Watch your altitude throughout the day. Think of where are you in relation to the joy line. And always try and spend as much time as you possibly can higher so that you're above the joy line. It will determine the quality of your day.
