START Coordinator Certifications
Coordinator Certification indicates a demonstration of effective implementation of the START model. Achieving the rigorous training and practice standards set by the National Center for START Services (NCSS), as part of the well-respected Institute on Disability at UNH, verifies fidelity to the mission, values, principles, and approaches of START. Additionally, certification validates specialized knowledge in the field of IDD-MH (intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health needs).
Congratulations to our recently certified coordinators!

Release of the Annual Disability Statistics Collection

The Annual Disability Statistics Compendium, Annual Disability Statistics Supplement, and State Reports for County-level Data are web-based tools that pool disability statistics published by various federal agencies together in one place. When working on legislative and other matters relating to persons with disabilities, the Compendium, Supplement, and State Reports make finding and using disability statistics easier. All parts of the collection can be viewed at the Disability Compendium website

The collection was released with a webinar presentation on February 7th and 8th.

SNTI Feature
History of SNTI

The START National Training Institute was founded in 2016 to provide a forum where START network partners from across the country learn about the newest research and evidence-based approaches, along with best practices and innovations associated with START programs, to improve local capacity, service outcomes, and life experiences for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities and mental health needs (IDD-MH) and their families. While the SNTI has been held since 2016, the START model was first developed and implemented in 1988, so we are very excited to celebrate 35 years of START at the 2023 event. The SNTI rotates locations around the country (virtual meetings were held during COVID-19). Different themes emerged throughout the years.

2016 - Atlanta, GA - Inaugural SNTI

2017 - Rye Brook, NY - Cultivating Hope Through Strength-Based Practices

2018 - Boston, MA - Celebrating 30 years of START

2019 - Alexandria, VA - Value in Us All: Advancing Inclusive Practices

2020 - Virtual - Learned Hopefulness & Premiere of the START Film

2021 - Virtual - START with Mindfulness: Unlocking Our Potential

2022 - Virtual - The Pursuit of Happiness

2023 - Austin, TX - Building Connections & Activating Strengths: 35 Years of START

PERMA Tip

M - Meaning
Connection Between Meaning and Belonging

A part of being human is the search for meaning and the need to have a sense of value and worth. Seligman (2012) discussed meaning as belonging and/or serving something greater than ourselves. To feel that sense of meaning in our lives, we need to feel that our actions are valuable, worthwhile, and appreciated by others. Being valued and appreciated creates a sense of belonging. Without belonging, it is difficult to find meaning.

For many people enrolled in START services, there have been barriers to achieving this sense of belonging and meaning. We know that people with disabilities experience marginalization and exclusion in many facets of their lives. Brene Brown writes “Yes, I am imperfect and vulnerable and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I am also brave and worthy of love and belonging.” Until we come to understand that imperfection and vulnerability are part of our shared humanity, we will continue to exclude people. Until we come to understand that we are all worthy of love and belonging, people will struggle to find meaning. The goals of our START network are to increase the understanding of our shared humanity and to create communities that foster belonging through accepting and embracing imperfection. This will lead to a place where we all, including people with disabilities, can experience ‘meaning’ on our path toward PERMA.
