Loreto Highlights Update - 17th February 2023
Director of Education Visit
On Wednesday, we welcomed the Director of Education, Ms Scott to Loreto. Mrs Napoli gave Ms Scott a tour of the school where she was able to get a snapshot of teaching and learning at Loreto.  Ms Scott was impressed with the lessons that she dropped in on. She enjoyed seeing our Nursery pupils sing, P.E. lessons in our wonderful sports hall, our Year 3 pupils presenting poetry, and a Year 6 Robotics and Literacy Lesson.
Valentine's Day
We made the most of Valentine's Day by spreading love and positivity around the school. Some of the pupils helped make cards for the staff and then delivered them on the day. This showed the pupils how little acts of kindness can go a long way. The pupils commented on how happy it made them feel to make others happy.
Dive In!
Years 5 and 6 have been working on their dives during their swimming lessons over the past few weeks. They are all gaining confidence in this area of swimming, and some have even attempted some racing dives.
Fraction Cakes
Year 6 had a treat this week when to their surprise their Monday morning Maths lesson was all about cake! What better way to teach fractions than by using a cake to demonstrate. They were treated to a fraction of the cake at the end of the lesson - 1/16 to be exact!
GIBFYM
It has been a busy week for our musical maestros as pupils performed at the Gibraltar Festival For Young Musicians.  Throughout the week pupils have participated in the competition, along with the school choir and Year 6 band entry.
Practice Makes Perfect!
Pupils in Year 3 have been practising their cursive handwriting. They have been copying and tracing sentences containing commas, question marks and speech marks. The children are developing a fluent and legible handwriting style.
Library Awards
Our Mr Reader awards scheme continues, and pupils have been reading their library books at home and during lunchtimes.  Our Library Prefects Cecilia and Nicolas presented the certificates and awards to the pupils.
World Book Day Competitions for Years FS2 - Year 6 can be found on our website's letter bank here.
Let’s be calm!
After a very successful 'Wellness Wednesday' last week, we created a calming corner in our classroom.  The year 1 pupils listened and responded to the story The 'Worrysaurus' about a tiny dinosaur who made a happy box to help him feel better.  We made our own class happy box and placed it in our calming corner.
Pen License
Congratulations to Ellie Risso on achieving her Pen License. Ellie has been working very hard on her handwriting and is the first member of Year 4 to achieve her Pen License! Well done!
Gold Book
Well done to pupils in Lower Primary and Foundation Stages who were presented with their Gold Award certificates and gold pencils.
Faith Diary
This week’s Gospel continues with the teachings Jesus gave his followers during his famous ’Sermon on the Mount.’  Like last week’s Gospel, it reminds us that being a true Christian is never easy - it always involves being counter-cultural, going against the social current rather than simply and unthinkingly doing what everybody else does.  At the heart of this Gospel lies the core of Christ’s entire teaching: we must love and pray not only for our friends, but also for our enemies. We all find it easy to love our friends and families, the people we feel close to and feel loved by in return, but, as always, Jesus asks us for more. He asks us to care for- and about - those who not only do not love us, but who may actively dislike or even hate us and wish us harm.  Humanly, this seems impossible, but learning to forgive and wish only good in return to those who harm us, is possible -  if we do it in His love. It requires a long journey, in that love, towards the grace of forgiveness.  It is not an easy journey, but if we dare to call ourselves Christians, it is one we must all attempt.
Time Is Ticking!
Class 2P have been learning about time this week. We found that the best way to learn is by using our own arms to pretend to be a clock.

The Big Brad Wolf!
Year 6 had a great morning undertaking some drama activities as part of our Literacy unit based on The Grimm Tales.  Pupils read and interpreted a script based on the Big Brad Wolf which was a twist to the much loved original fairy tale story – The Three Little Pigs.
The pupils surprised us with their acting skills – we have a very talented bunch! Well done Year 6.

Road Racers
Congratulations to Rania, Oscar, Oliver, Sophie, Olivia and Ben and many other Loreto pupils who participated in the Youth Road Running League this week.  The pupils won many medals and trophies, which they were keen to bring into school.
Welcome To Our Office
Check out the office set up in our Nursery 1 and 2 classrooms. Our office set up encourages the child to role play which is beneficial for developing language and communication.  Role play also encourages imagination, creativity, social and emotional development, supports physical development and aids problem solving.
The children love it and it is great to see them enjoying it and having fun together.
