Nebula, co-founded by MIE’s Neha Basra, wins $25K Prize at RBC Innovation Challenge

On January 27, Neha Basra (MechE 2T2+PEY), along with her teammates Alton Rego (Chem), Kim Watada (Chem), Mary Daka (CivMin), and Matthew McArthur (Architecture) placed 2nd at the RBC “Tech for a Greener Future” Innovation Challenge winning $25,000 in prize money and access to resources to further develop their concept “Nebula.”

Complex systems we face today consist of numerous sub-systems and components, and its continuous operation depends on that of sub-systems and components. As such, we at C-MORE (Centre for Maintenance Optimization and Reliability Engineering) have made significant research efforts in physical asset management by applying machine learning to asset condition monitoring and optimal maintenance recommendations. In this talk, we will cover fundamental notions of machine learning and its application to asset management. As part of the talk we will share multiple case studies as well as advanced algorithms developed.

Machine learning is playing an increasingly important role in decision making, with key applications ranging from dynamic pricing and recommendation systems to personalized medicine and clinical trials. In this talk, we consider the challenge of reducing difficult online decision-making problems to well-understood offline supervised learning problems. Xu will also provide an overview of his additional work and broader research agenda on bridging online and offline learning towards improved data-driven decision making. He will highlight the importance of problem structures and discuss the exciting opportunities for the operations research community.

CRAFT Project Awards 2023

CRAFT is pleased to announce that is launching an RFP for the CRAFT Project Awards 2023.
 
Through these awards, NRC will provide $50K in seed funding (which must be matched by UofT faculty) to support collaborative projects co-led by Research Officers at the NRC in Boucherville and U of T faculty members. Successful projects will aim to make fundamental advances in microfluidic technologies and their applications that align with one or more of CRAFT’s pillars (i.e., organ-on-a-chip, biofabrication, diagnostics and bioanalytics).
 
Deadline for application submission: Feb 28, 2023.
