2019 Clos Mogador Com Tu Garnatxa Negra de la Figuera
Montsant, Spain

Rene Barbier of Clos Mogador is a pioneer that essentially put the region of Priorat on the winemaking map. Earning the official D.O.C recognition in 2001, the Barbier family has done nothing but grow, improve and expand since. Clos Mogador is cemented in the Mount Rushmore of top Spanish wines period. The 2019 vintage of their flagship Clos Mogador Priorat just earned 99pts from Robert Parker, just a hair shy of perfect.

Rene has three sons; Rene Jr., Christian, and Anderson whom all contribute to the flourishing family business in their own way. In the early part of the century, Rene started experimenting with winekmaing in the village of Figuera, the highest area of Montsant, about 2,000 feet above sea level and almost immediately realized its extraordinary potential. Already familiar with growing Garnacha from licorella (slate) in extreme conditions, Rene felt compelled to let the grape shine in this new project. Him and his sons started a project called Com Tu, named by youngest son Anderson which showcased 50-year-old vines of Garnacha from Figuera. Now on the fourth vintage, the wine is coming into its own.

This 100% Garnacha is a gorgeous violet color that spews floral aromas and juicy blood orange. The wine sees no oak, only stainless steel which accentuates the natural juiciness of the varietal. Structurally sound with a texture that carresses the palate with silky purple fruit and polished tannins. Herbacous raspberry leaf, blood orange sorbet and rocky flavors lead to softer, more delicate notes of raspberry puree and earthy black truffle. Texturally, this wine reminds me of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, with it's striking mineral, tension and power. The tannin structure allows the wine to be monstrous, yet elegant at the same time. Flavors of candied ginger and baking spices linger on the back palate, followed by peppered beef, cherry cola and a hint of saddle leather. It's clear that this is old vine Grenache grown masterfully by someone from either the Southern Rhone or Priorat. It has extreme age-ability yet it's quite euphoric in its young state. We enjoyed this wine with some simply grilled lamb chops with a duo of sauces; spiced carrot puree' and a nutty tahini. Fried pine nuts and rosemary oil complented the succulent lamb and the herbacous flavors in the juicy wine danced beautifully with the chops.
If you recall, one of my most memorable wine-drinking experiences that I wrote about recently involved a bottle of 2010 Clos Mogador Priorat. An absolute "goosebump wine", as I like to call it. Traces of perfection and the family's sexy style has been imparted into the 2019 Com Tu. The wine has the same energy and aura around it. They both smell incredibly like violets, pepper and truffle too!

94pts Robert Parker:
"The 2019 Com Tu is now part of the Clos Mogador portfolio even though it started as a small separate project from Anderson Barbier, who is now training to be a chef, so the project is continued by his brother, René. This is now the village wine from La Figuera (in Montsant) from the Mogador team. 2019 is a year of concentration but with very good acidity, and the wine shows the good Priorat (even if it's from Montsant!)—warm and ripe with careful extraction. The wine expresses a typical vintage in balance, showing the power the zone delivers. It's a very complete wine, still young but that will grow with time in bottle."
