Hello IRRC staff,

This Tuesday is Mardi Gras, a holiday that has roots in both Christian and pagan traditions. Also known as “Carnival,” this holiday is celebrated around the world, and is particularly popular in Venice, Italy, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the U.S., Mardi Gras is primarily associated with the extravagant annual festivities held in New Orleans, Louisiana. An estimated 1.4 million people visit New Orleans each year to participate in the wild parties and parades. Mardi Gras floats can cost upwards of $200,000, and it is estimated that around 25 million pounds of beads are thrown into the streets of the city each year during these celebrations.
