Stritennya (also known as Imbolc or Candlemas) is time to burn the didukh and straw from the holidays. (photo at Anastasia Fyk's family farm in Manitoba)

Dear folk camp family & friends,

This past week we’ve passed the holiday of Stritennya, when, according to folk custom, winter battles with summer, and the quickening towards spring begins. Seeds and roots under the surface imagining sending shoots above the deep snow some day…
just as we begin preparing ourselves–  writing pysanky, and dreaming, praying, meditating upon peace, with hope in our hearts.

In this newsletter:
Gratitude for the holiday season that's passed.
Time to renew your membership for 2023.
Annual Report for 2022.
Stay tuned for upcoming singing & pysanka workshops!

We’d like to give gratitude for the very full Koliada season that has passed, that we were able to share in as a community, together at last!

(Remembering that terrible destruction continues across the ocean, and that we are so fortunate to be able to gather in peace here and with so much abundance, on stolen land (lest we forget).

Thank you to Andrea Kuzmich, musical director of Kosa Koliadnyky this year, and the support team: Iryna Lozynska, Mario Morello and Bozena Hrycyna.Thank you to all who dedicated their time and energy to singing, who spread the spirit of Ukrainian koliada to many and raised funds for Folk Camp. The funds will go towards continuing the educational work that Folk Camp & Kosa do in the community, and $2,000 will be donated to the Canada Ukraine Foundation.

Thanks to all who made a magical memorable Melanka-Rozkoliada event!

We had a beautiful unforgettable holiday celebration organized by Kosa & Folk Camp community members on January 28, at the Belarusian Orthodox church in Toronto.
Generous potluck spread, festive atmosphere and energetic dancing late into the night... and of course:
koza!

Wonderful musicians from Treble 9, Csango Unchained, Honeypaw, and Tangi, Siarzhuk, Imi, Ivan Franko, and those that joined the jam; Our best dressed bartender Misha from Drom Taberna; our beloved hosts Anastasia, Mario & Sasha; Kosa koliadnyky & Belarusian Javarovy Ludzi singing friends, and all the Melanka “mummers” and “babas”!
May the wheat grow this spring! May we our bellies be full!

Time to bless candles and set them aside to have ready for emergencies,
when we need to call on protection of our homes,
and communities.

As we enter this time of gestation and fasting, please turn your thoughts and prayers towards peace for Ukraine, and what you wish to see grow in our Folk Camp community here in Canada.

Wishing everyone a joyful Maslyanytsya (Mardi Gras)!
