Indigenous Artist Spotlight: Kairyn Potts

Kairyn (Kai) Potts (he/him) is proudly Nakota Sioux from Treaty 6 Territory, from Paul First Nation, and the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation. He is a proud Two-Spirit person and currently sits as the National Youth Board Representative for the 2 Spirits in Motion Society.

As a former Indigenous Youth Suicide Prevention Team representative, he is a passionate youth advocate who works to improve Indigenous youth's lives, particularly interested in queer youth and youth in the child and family services system. Kai now makes his home in beautiful T'Karonto where he works as a writer, actor, model, TV host, and continues his youth advocacy through content creation and frontline workshops and community events.

Advocacy Items

Participate in the #FutureOfLIVE Advocacy Campaign

As part of the #FutureOfLIVE advocacy campaign, CAPACOA and partner associations invites members of the performing arts sector to reach out to your federal MPs and discuss the importance of the Canada Arts Presentation Fund and the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program. The #FutureOfLIVE campaign page contains resources including a letter template, meeting script, and supplementary information to assist your discussion with your federal MP.

Join CAPACOA for Connections 2.0

Registration is open for CAPACOA’s Connections 2.0—a virtual networking event providing a platform for connectivity and networking amongst arts practitioners from Canada and throughout Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, New Zealand, and Spain. Canadian and International artists will have the opportunity to showcase their projects through 5-minute virtual Snapshots, while uncovering potential collaborations with presenters via one-on-one B2B meetings and virtual round table discussions throughout this free four-day event. Live translations will be available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. The event will be taking place from March 27th30th, 2023. Registration is open for producers, programmers, presenters and global First Nations peers to attend the Critical Response Process (CRP) as part of Dana Waranara Digital. The CRP process, facilitated by Joyce Rosario, offers an invitation to provide valuable input to the development of five Australian Indigenous works through facilitated feedback sessions taking place across March–May 2023. Wapikwaniwin Gathering at reStays Ottawa

Participants will have the opportunity to connect with emerging and established Indigenous leaders who seek to collaborate, create fellowship, and share knowledge throughout the event. CAPACOA will also launch the Wapikwaniwin Felllowship—a brand new professional development program created, led, and held in a space through Indigenous governance—at the in-person gathering. Space and funding support is available to attend this exciting event. Register for Pacific Contact 2023

BC Touring Council's annual showcase festival and conference Pacific Contact will be taking place April 12th–15th, 2023 in New Wesminster, BC on the unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Halkomelem-speaking peoples. Regular registration rates are available up to March 23rd, 2023, after which prices will increase by $50. BCTC will waive the membership fee for presenters registering from out of the province. Upcoming Deadlines

IBPOC Touring Network Conference: Update and Call for Submissions

The Wind in The Leaves Collective (WILC) has partnered with Atlantic Ballet, Canada Dance Assembly, Canadian Stage, Citadel and Co., Decidedly Jazz, Sampradaya Dance and the Westben Centre to explore the potential of a Canadian touring network that supports Indigenous, Black and racialized artists. 

Please complete this 10-minute survey by March 17th, 2023 and enter for a chance to win two tickets to the WILC’s Allies & Friends Program on May 26th and 27th, 2023.

Multidisciplinary IBPOC artists and allies working with IBPOC artists are invited to submit a video of their work, to be shown at a conference for presenters in May 2023. Selected artists will receive $200 and have their bio, website, and contact information included in the conference program and available online. All submissions, including bios and descriptions of work, must be sent either by WeTransfer or Dropbox to windintheleavescollective@gmail.com by March 24th, 2023. Showcase Applications and Early Bird Registration for Mundial Montréal

Mundial Montreal November 14-17, 2023. 13th Edition. Call for artists is closing in 2 weeks! February 1 to March 15 presented by the Caisse de la culture Desjardins. APPLY NOW!

Artists and their teams are invited to apply to be considered for a showcase in the 13th edition of Mundial Montréal. The call for artists, presented by the Caisse Desjardins de la Culture, seeks to bring market-ready artists who wish to develop their careers at a national and international level to become part of the official program of Mundial Montréal 2023. To submit your project, fill out the form below by March 15th, 2023. Please note that an administrative fee of $45.00 is required for each artist application.

Recognizing embedded colonial structures in the performing arts sector, including ways of thinking and knowing, inspires our ongoing responsibility to decolonize our work practices, to remain committed to Indigenous resurgence and reclamation, as well as platform the stories of Black, People of Colour, Deaf/Disabled and LGBT2Q+ voices across the province.
