Truth of the Week w. 5
Study week five has come to an end and it is time for a new truth! Today is February 19th and exactly 1826 years ago, on February 19th year 197, the Battle of Lugdunum (modern day Lyon in France) took place between the Roman emperor Septimius Severus and Clodius Albinus. Clodius Albinus was trying to gain power of the Roman empire by force and had the legions of Roman Britain and modern day Portugal and Spain supporting him.
The succession in the Roman empire had been tumultuous since the year 193. Septimus Severus had also taken power by force. To make that possible he had made an alliance with Clodius Albinus and named him heir. The alliance was broken when Severus a few years later named his son, Caracalla, heir. Albinus then took 40 000 men marching south from Britain. After numerous battles Albius was finally defeated in Lugdunum in a long and bloody fight. Septimus Severus was emperor for 14 years before he was killed quelling another uprising in Roman Britain.
