Raul

Most of my rescues have been dogs. I have never had a cat as a pet. They fascinate me with their graceful moves. The myth that cats are aloof and independent formulated some of my ideas about cats. Until three weeks ago when Raul came to our building in the back where the bushes form a hedge around a sculpture. I took Teaberry out for his morning walk and I heard these screams. The pathetic sound was so loud others heard it all night.

I thought surely this animal must be in pain and near death. I took Teaberry back upstairs not sure what I would encounter. I got some chicken and some water and headed back down. The sounds were mournful and sounded like RA UL. I put the water and chicken down and this pretty gray cat emerged. As soon as he saw me the howling stopped and he came and rubbed my leg. He was so affectionate. I gingerly approached and he let me pick him up. He looked ok, with no detectable injuries. As soon as I put him down the crying started. I got Bill and we headed to PETCO to buy a crate and cat food. When I got back the cat was not there, but the food had been eaten. Rats, I thought. He had cried for hours for help and now silence.

I asked our security guard, German if he heard him or saw him to please let me know or catch him if he could. I looked and couldn’t find him. An hour later, German came with a huge grin, cat in hand. We smiled and put him in the crate, which was too small and the howling began again. Teaberry and cats do not mix. He thinks they are for chasing.

I called rescues and the only one who could take him was Ange at AngeliCat. Since it was Sunday afternoon we had to wait until Monday. What to do for the night? German took him home for the night and then delivered him to Ange on Monday. German came up with the name Raul. It suits him because of the sounds he made. Bill and I are supporting Raul’s care. Raul is not a street cat, he was someone’s pet. I only hope he got out and was not abandoned. Raul was scared and literally screaming for help. He is one of the lucky ones. I wish we could save them all.  Pets cannot fend for themselves. If Raul had been quiet, who knows? If you would like to adopt a cat contact Ange on Facebook on the Angelicat page or What’s App +52 322 108 0129. Beautiful Cats you can take back to the States or Canada.

San Jose de Valle

The Arena Riviera Nayarit in San Jose del Valle hosted the PEACEAnimals clinic this week. The arena has become a frequent site for clinics and is widely recognized and anticipated by pet owners and rescuers in the area. Isabel Moran has done an amazing job promoting and organizing in her hometown. It is one of our favorite places to operate a clinic and is ideal due to the ample shady spaces and accommodating hosts. It is also a great place for horse lovers who are able to see horses training and being groomed.  The people of San Jose are very warm and grateful for the service to their community as most stay around and help out while waiting for their pets. We have enjoyed a very consistent crew of volunteers over the last several weeks including Louis, Danielle, Peter, Eileen, and Shalimar. They work very well with the vets Pacheco, Anthony, and Leslie and have developed a very efficient system. Although the clinic was limited to three days this week, the team made up for it by taking in more animals over those days. We look forward to returning to San Jose soon.

Esperamos volver pronto a San José.

You found a dog in need, Now what?

  1. Protect the dog. Find a leash, a rope, a cord; anything. Get the dog out of harm's way and keep the dog in one place.
  2. If injured or sick, transport or find a way to get the dog to a vet immediately. There is a 24-hour vet in Puerto Vallarta if it’s a night or weekend. Many vets in this area will allow you to open accounts. Vet care in Mexico is also much cheaper than in many countries. You can post later on social media asking for donations to help with vet costs if necessary. Worry about the dog first, money later.
  3. Does the dog have an ID tag? Contact the number. Many do not have tags or collars. If it has a collar, note what it looks like.
  4. Post pictures of the dog, a full description, and the location on Facebook. Many people are willing to help dogs here and there are independent rescuers. A dog can’t be helped without the location and pictures. Posting without this information does nothing to help and people do not have time to go searching for dogs who may be on the move. Also, post where the dog is protected or a number someone can contact with questions.
  5. If the dog appears relatively healthy and is hanging around, provide water and food. If you see ticks or fleas, consider giving a Simparica or Bravecto, available from any vet.
To report animal abuse or rescue needed in Puerto Vallarta, please call 911 AND request the GREEN PATROL (PATRULLA VERDE), or call the City Shelter at (322) 293-3690.

There is also a reporting system for mistreatment, abuse, and neglect for All animals in the municipality of the Bay of Banderas.
