- Congrats to EEP Ph.D. student Aritra Chakrabarty for his recent guest blog post on Keweenaw Now about the growing importance of Indigenous voices around the world in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. Aritra was part of Michigan Tech’s delegation to the COP27 climate conference, held in November 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. His research is focused on development policy around energy transitions in the Global South.
- Congrats to Don Lafreniere, Sarah Scarlett, Dan Trepal, and James Juip for their recent proposal to the National Endowment for the Humanities for a project entitled Deep Maps and Community Histories: Advancing Transdisciplinary and Public-Facing Scholarship in the Spatial Humanities.

- This summer will include the final preparations for the Vernacular Architecture Forum's annual conference hosted at Michigan Tech in June 2024. You can help the planning team in several different ways: Join teams in the field to document structures that will be part of the conference tours; Learn to turn field notes into finished floor plan and elevation drawings in SketchUp for inclusion in the guidebook; Scour the Michigan Tech archives for previous documentation of historic structures and landscapes; Make maps of the tour routes, and more! Experience with archival research or architectural fieldwork is desirable but not required.
- Dr. Sarah Scarlett and Dr. Don Lafreniere : Digital Public History Communication project
- This project involves adapting existing research about French-Canadians living in the Keweenaw in the early twentieth century into engaging historical narratives for an online exhibition.
- Join the team in the Geospatial Research Facility who are partners in a large 7-year project based in Canada called Three Centuries of Francophone Migration in North America, 1640-1940.
- You can help transform new research into Story Maps and other online spatial narratives for inclusion in an online exhibition for the whole project to be launched in 2026. You would also have the option to participate in community-engaged planning with francophone descent groups to plan in-person heritage programming for the following year.
- Experience making Story Maps, or with historical research in the Keweenaw are desirable but not required.

- Join the Keweenaw Time Traveler outreach team this summer. We will be bringing the Time Traveler kiosks to setup information booths at various festivals, parades, and events this summer. Also be on the ground as we roll out or mobile storytelling app by placing QR codes around the region to help others learn about how our environments have changed through time.

- Funded Graduate Research Assistant Position

- Title: Landfill mining: pasts and futures of waste management
- Landfills and other waste management sites are frequently the causes of environmental and social injustices, yet many waste sites also hold substantial quantities of aluminum and other resources.
- This 1-year research position is part of a US Department of Energy-funded team investigating the potential benefits and impacts of "landfill mining."
- The candidate will work with Dr. Jonathan Robins to investigate patterns of landfill development and engage in interdisciplinary research to evaluate the impacts of landfill mining on landfill-adjacent communities.
