DC overpays thousands of landlords: Report

As recently as yesterday, 4801 Connecticut was advertising its one-bedroom apartments to prospective renters for $1,700 per month. According to a Washington Post investigation, the DC Housing Authority is subsidizing nearly two dozen renters in similar 4801 apartments, and in each case is paying $2,648 per month. The difference: nearly $1,000. Not all overpayments are this large, and the Post reports that they affect around a quarter of subsidized units across the District. But the cost to DCHA and its housing affordability efforts? Millions of dollars each year.

We've written more in our latest apartments update about the Post investigation, but there are a lot of threads to pull in the original article, and it's worth your time. Plus, read on about a large rent increase likely coming to a rent-stabilized apartment near you.

Rock Creek E. coli levels are dangerously high

Elevated E. coli bacteria levels in the creek alarmed even a USGS crew taking samples recently at Joyce Bridge. Absolutely no one should come in contact with the water in Rock Creek and its tributaries. That goes for pets, too. So why aren't there more - and more prominent - public health warnings?

ANC 3F meets TONIGHT at 7pm

And DC Water will have an update on the Soapstone sewer relining project. At the January meeting, agency reps said the relining work would be getting under way by early this month. There have been no further public announcements since.

The agenda also includes a budget proposal for DC: to buy the former Intelsat and Whittle School building at 4000 Connecticut. And we'll learn about plans to build DC's government archives on the UDC campus.

We propose a Connecticut Avenue "Carbs Crawl"

Because, by our count, there are now FIVE places between Woodley Park and Chevy Chase Circle to grab a bagel. And when Buffalo & Bergen arrives in Cleveland Park, there will be SIX places. A bagel bounty, one could say.
