  • Keweenaw Youth for Climate action is holding an Info Session on February 15th, 5-6PM in Fisher 135.
    • They will be educating the audience about the difference between investing in fossil fuel companies vs. using them, discussing divestment as a climate action and social justice strategy, and providing updates on our progress with our own Fossil Fuel divestment campaign at MTU.
  •  The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) will be hosting a Pre-Valentines Day Bake Sale. Come check it out in the library from 12- 4 PM on 2/13/23.

  • Congratulations to Madelina DiLisi (Accelerated MS EEP). She has been nominated for the Keweenaw Community SparkPlug Awards in two categories: Young Professional of the Year and Community Contributor of the Year. This is wonderful news and we are proud of your impact in our community.
  • Kathie Brosemer (PhD EEP) recently received the Department of Social Science Outstanding Scholarship Award in recognition of her academic performance.  Congrats Kathie!
  • Jennifer Rachels (PhD EEP) recently received the Department of Social Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award in recognition of her teaching performance.  Congrats Jennifer!
  • Congrats to Dr. Laura Walikainen Rouleau who was selected for the Dean's Teaching Showcase.  Dr. Rouleau's work to bring history to life using the archives and our local landscape is really impressive.  Read more about her approach in Tech Today.
Social Scientists in Action
  • Dr. Shardul Tiwari and Dr. Chelsea Schelly, along with colleagues Gaby Ou, Mostafa Ardakani and Jianli Chen, are co-authors of an article entitled "Conceptualizing Resilience: An Energy Services Approach" in Energy Research & Social Science.
  • Congrats to Dr. Don Lafreniere for his recent proposal to the National Institute of Health for a project entitled PRIMED for Healthy PLACES: Examining the Roles of Structural Racism and Urban Development Patterns on Health Disparities.  The project includes colleagues from Michigan State University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Oklahoma. 
  • Don Lee (EEP PhD Student), Dr. Chelsea Schelly, Dr, Valoree Gagnon, and Dr. Shardul Tiwari with colleague Sarah Smith of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Committee for Alternative and Renewable Energy, are co-authors of an article entitled "Preferences and perceived barriers to pursuing energy sovereignty and renewable energy: A tribal nations perspective" published in Energy Research & Social Science.
  • Kari Henquinet is quoted multiple times by International Educator Magazine in the story “Leading from the Middle” in its January 2023 issue.
    • Henquinet shares her experiences leading and advocating for international education programs in higher education in the story, which discussed effective strategies for mid-level leaders in higher ed. Mid-level staff can be effective leaders—even when they lack official authority or decision-making power.
  • Congrats to Dr. Angie Carter for the recent article entitled "Supporting Women Landowners in Wetland Conservation." published in Society & Natural Resources.
    • The article analyzes data from a statewide survey in Iowa and finds that a lack of experience with and misinformation about wetlands, coupled with a lack of access to needed conservation knowledge networks, limits conservation action for women landowners, no matter their age cohort.

  • The Western UP Food Systems Collaborative will be holding a photo contest to celebrate our communities rich foodways and stories!
    • You are invited to submit one or more photos you love for their look, message, or personal meaning to at least one of the following categories: 
      • Living off the Land 
        • Examples: Hunting, Gathering, Foraging, Food Landscapes, Health, Well-being
      • Make It, Bake It, Preserve It
        • Examples: Canning/Preserves, Value Added Goods, Food Dishes, Gifting Practices, Storing Produce for Winter
      • Food as Community
        • Examples: Sharing a dish with family, Trading, Buying from local vendors, Seed swapping, Community gardening, Sharing meals
      • Growing Practices & Food Prep
        • Examples: Compost, Crop covers, Hoop houses, Gardening, Preparations for season changes, Preparing for storing food, Preparing meals
      • Youth (Participants who are 17 or younger)
    • Photos accompanied by a title and short description can be submitted by using this form.

Upcoming Conferences, Webinars, and Talks
  • 2023 Best Student Paper Awards-Call for Papers
    • If you are a Ph.D., Master’s, or undergraduate student, you are invited to submit a paper for consideration of the “Best Student Paper Awards” given by the International Association for Society and Natural Resources (IASNR).
    • The following awards will be provided for the best papers by Taylor & Francis Group LLC:
      • Best paper submitted by a Doctoral student: check for $300
      • Best paper submitted by a Master’s student: check for $200
      • Best paper submitted by an undergraduate: check for $100
    • Students must be a current member of IASNR.
    • Students are encouraged-but not required, to present their paper at the conference.
      • Students who choose to present at the conference will need to have their abstract submitted and accepted for the conference.
    • The completed paper and title page must be emailed as an attachment to Dr. Jones (mountain@utk.edu) by Sunday, May 28 (3PM-EST).

  • Postdoctoral Fellow in International Sustainable Development-Indiana University 
    • The application deadline for this position is March 6th, 2023.
    • Responsibilities include teaching two international development-related undergraduate courses per year; working in collaboration with the Tobias Center for Innovation in International Development conducting to organize a conference on Area Studies and Sustainable Development to be held in 2025 and draft a resulting white paper; and, in collaboration with and mentorship from the Center for the Study of Global Change, organizing and presenting at K-16 educator workshops on issues related to internationalizing curricula through teaching international development-related content.
