Introduction

Dear <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>,

The first month of the year 2023 is already over, but ECRR would like to congratulate the Cumbrian Rivers and the Lake District National Park in England on winning the IRF European Riverprize 2022! And they would also like to thank the International River Foundation for the institution and the fourth award of this prize.
This eNews reports on this award and other positive  river restoration matters. All of which can ultimately be classified under the VOICES FOR RIVERS, which not only give the rivers a voice but herewith also represent the rights of the rivers. Which, in view of the upcoming UN World Water Conference in March of this year, can only be seen as positive.

We welcome your feedback and questions on this 29th eNews issue at secretariat@ecrr.org

VOICES FOR RIVERS Messages from the 25th International RiverSymposium 2022

STRENGTHENING THE UNDERSTANDING OF RIVERS

At the 25th International Riversymposium in Vienna in November 2022, the over 500 in person and online participants celebrated the important efforts that people throughout the world are undertaking to ensure the protection, restoration and resilience of rivers. The overall message of the Symposium was that an even stronger commitment to restoration and protections of rivers needs to be given.

In March of 2023, for the first time in 50 Years, the world will have a UN Event that focuses on water. This event provides an important opportunity to expand the level of effort directed to improving the condition of the world’s rivers.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Balkan rivers are the best connected in Europe but the most threatened by new dams.
  • Every one of nine future dam building scenarios considered will result in significant loss of connectivity.
  • Large dams will fragment less and generate more hydropower than building small dams.
  • Large dams will fragment less and generate more hydropower than building small dams.
