Asian Media Access Condemns Recent St. Paul Police Shooting

On February 11th, St. Paul Police Officers were called to an apartment building on the 100 block of Western Avenue South on a report of a man threatening people with a knife in the community room around 5 p.m. Saturday.  Officers made contact with Yia Xiong and asked him to drop the knife. He did not respond, allegedly turning to unlock his apartment door and go inside. As he went inside, officers kicked the door to stop it from closing and asked him to come out before backing away.

Yia Xiong opened the door and stepped into the hallway with the knife still in his hand. It was at this time that officers Abdirahman Dahir and Noushue Cha fired their weapons, and Yia died at the scene

Transportation is the Heart of Asian American Community  - the Blue Line Story

Asian Media Access has been involved in Blue Line Planning since the early 2010s, from its conception, community health assessment, construction (from airport to Target Field Station), old extension route selection, and proposed new extension route, until today’s engineering design and station development for its extension. The more we are involved, the more we see the presence of sincere efforts to position equity in all level of planning, along with how hard it is to carry out in reality, how valuable it is for all of us to move toward true equity anyway, and how we can put public transportation in the heart of Asian American community.

March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) designates March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM).  In supporting the awareness effort, Asian Media Access and our partner - MN Minnesota Alliance on Problem Gambling have joint-forced to design a symposium - Cultural Communities Symposium on Problem Gambling and Mental Health on March 25th (Sat) at the Wilder Center at 451, Lexington Parkway North, Saint Paul, MN 55104

One of the trigger points of the Symposium is the March Madness – the annual NCAA basketball tournament, which is one of the most anticipated and watched events in all of sports since 1939, as well as it sees over $8 billion wagered on its games, and this is the backdrop that all of us like to address with the “Problem Gambling Awareness Month” opportunity to help raise awareness and create action for those suffering from gambling problems.

Youth Spotlight: Thomas Vang

Thomas Vang discovered Asian Media Access (AMA) by attending a dance workshop hosted by his friends involved in K-move dance group. Following the dance workshop, Thomas researched further into AMA. Thomas says, "I was intrigued by their [Asian Media Access] focus in inspiring, nurturing, and feeding the creativity of the youth through multimedia arts and technologies— something I wish I could have experienced growing up in Missouri. As an AAPI, civil and social issues were also important to me". Thomas reached out in hopes of getting more involved by volunteering for future activities and events. Since then, Thomas has become a familiar face in the community and has been a valuable member of Asian Media Access.

A Storytelling Movement

Nominations close on March 24. Build this movement with us and send in a nomination today!

In partnership with Pollen Midwest and two local residents, Bruce Mooty and Tim Maudlin, the Minneapolis Foundation is proud to uplift a storytelling movement to celebrate the people, projects, and organizations that are writing the next chapter of our community’s story: Here is MPLS!

Here is MPLS will share a series of stories that capture the perspectives and work of people at the forefront of change efforts in our city—those working toward a better, more just future, while acknowledging the political, economic, and racial divisions that have and continue to hold us back. We need your help to discover and amplify these stories.

Nominate any person, organization, or project that serves Minneapolis residents and is bringing innovative solutions and a community-rooted approach to make our city a better place.

The stories will span four major themes: housing, opportunity equity, public safety, and civic engagement. Nominees can be focused on any field of work within each theme. Stories will be chosen with help from an advocacy council of 16 cross-sector community leaders and released this summer. The chosen nominees will receive a $5,000 prize, plus extensive promotion of their work.

You can also show your support by adding your name, or the name of your organization or business, to the list of Here is MPLS endorsing organizations

Please join the College of Liberal Arts and History Soirée for a talk by Dr. Chelsea Szendi Schieder, Professor in the Faculty of Economics at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan. This talk will discuss Dr. Schieder’s research journey studying and writing about the student movement, radical politics, and gender theory in Japan to open up a larger conversation on the role of personal experience in political movements and knowledge creation. Dr. Schieder will use examples from her research on gender and social movements to explore ways that we in the present can look to the past for clues about future possibilities. In particular, she will share what she learned from examining the political meanings created by female participation in leftist campus-based protest in the 1960s in Japan, which illuminate gendered dynamics that help us understand postwar Japanese politics and the complicated legacies of radical protest in Japan. This historical research has also shaped how she understands the role of scholarship and scholars in demanding reform, and how she understands the importance of empathy and solidarity in politics and scholarship.
