NFU encourages land donations for Community Land Trusts

Canada is facing a farmland crisis. If left unaddressed, it will only worsen as farmer demographics shift drastically over the next decade. Community land trusts (CLTs) help provide a way forward. CLTs are non-profit corporations created to acquire and hold land for the benefit of a community.

Remembering Dolores Shadd

The NFU envisions a future with no barriers to racialized farmers and farm workers accessing land and growing sustainable farm operations. As we work towards the future we collectively envision, we look back and remember Dolores Shadd, a Black farm woman and an organizing force and leader in the National Farmers Union, having led campaigns and held positions on the national board and in the Women’s Caucus.

Thankfully, we can revisit Dolores’ memory and hear her stories captured here in an interview.

Farmers – prepare to have your say on Canada’s Seed Regulations!

The CFIA will soon be launching a consultation survey to get farmers’ views on potential changes to Canada’s Seed Regulations. The NFU has prepared background material to help our members and other farmers better understand our seed regulations and the implications of some of the changes that could be proposed. Find the fact sheets here. Please share widely, especially if you have opportunities to talk about the seed system at farmer gatherings!

Next Class: Solid Biofuels - Agricultural Biomass and BECCS

With Almuth Ernsting

On Thursday March 9th at noon pacific, Biofuelwatch’s Co-Director Almuth Ernsting will help NFU members understand emerging technologies such as Bio-Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) and the possible demands on forests and farmlands and “agricultural residues” that may be called upon in the future to help fuel negative-emissions electricity production. While liquid biofuels are relatively well understood, solid biofuels are less so and raise a number of critical policy issues.

The National Farmers Union is a grassroots farmer organization advocating for farm families across Canada since 1969. Members work together to achieve agricultural policies that ensure dignity and income security for farm families while protecting and enhancing rural environments for future generations.

The NFU advocates for a food system based on the principles of food sovereignty, which calls for a food system that values farmers and what they grow; rebuilds relationships between food producers and those who eat; reclaims local decision making about food production and environmental protection; and strengthens connections between people and the land, empowering communities and citizens to make intentional decisions based on local needs and conditions to ensure a resilient and sustainable future. The NFU collaborates locally, nationally and internationally to research, educate and share effective solutions that lead to a better world for farm families and their local communities.

All farmers are welcome to join the NFU as full voting members. Non-farmers may join as non-voting Associate Members. All who support the NFU's goals are invited to donate to support our work. For more about the NFU please visit our
 website.

web.
