FEBRUARY 11th, 2023
Dear Parents,

By now you should have received information about our biennial gala “Going for the Green” in your child’s Thursday folder. It will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at the Greensboro Country Club. We hope that you will be able to join us for an evening of entertainment, celebration, and fundraising for our new sports field and track.

We have one addition to the information you received Thursday: the link below will take you to an online form where you can purchase tickets, select sponsorship and donor levels, and make a donation if you are unable to attend on March 18th. This link can also be found on the school website under Support SPX/2023 Gala. Please use this online link rather than requesting that your FACTS account be billed. You can, of course, still write a check made payable to SPX School. Please contact Amy McKee or Julie Wise in the school office with any questions.

Greetings from the Health Room!  Spring sports are right around the corner.  If your student plans to try out for track, girl’s soccer, tennis, golf, boy’s lacrosse, girl’s lacrosse, baseball or kickball, we must have a current (within the last year) physical on file in the health room.  Every student participating in an after school sport is required by Diocesean policy to have a Diocese Health Form on file.  Physicals that expire during the sport season need to be updated as they expire.  They must be current on the date of try outs or the student is not permitted to participate.  If you have any questions regarding the expiration date of your student’s physical, please contact the Health Room.  GO COMETS!

"Abundant Life!" is the theme of the 46th annual DYC, based on the Gospel reading for the closing Mass on Good Shepherd Sunday, April 30th.

In an effort to re-imagine DYC, this year’s Diocesan Youth Advisory Council is introducing NEW elements to the event.  To realize the goal of creating a "more truly diocesan youth conference," this year parishes are invited to participate by volunteering in two ways:

1.  Be part of the actual conference program
2.  Bring materials to be shared and taken home by all to help local homeless individuals in your home communities. (This component will also include an educational component of advocacy and sourcing and vetting local agencies.)

“You could call this 50th anniversary year a ‘Year of Faith.’ We are proclaiming along with St. Peter in today’s Gospel: ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God’ (Mt 16: 16).”

“Faith More Precious than Gold” (1 Peter 1:7)

The Diocese of Charlotte celebrates its golden anniversary in 2022 –
a year to be hallmarked by a renewal of our Catholic faith. Celebrations include a diocese-wide Marian Pilgrimage, the 2022 Eucharistic Congress, family-friendly events, 50 Acts of Charity, and historical highlights of the Church in western North Carolina from missionary times to today’s diverse and growing diocese.

Throughout this anniversary year, let us recall the past with gratitude, celebrate the present with joy, and look to the future with hope that we might glorify God and strengthen our diocesan family –
above all, affirming our faith which is “more precious than gold.”

Help protect all of God’s children
Everyone has a role to play in protecting children. North Carolina law requires all adults to immediately report suspected child abuse by anyone to law enforcement agencies. If you know or suspect that a minor (person under 18) has been abused, please call 9-1-1 or contact local law enforcement.
Also, if you have information about possible sexual abuse or misconduct by any clergy, employee or volunteer of the Diocese of Charlotte, report concerns securely and anonymously 24/7 over the phone or online: 1-888-630-5929 or
www.RedFlagReporting.com/RCDOC.

Safe Environment training

ALUMNI NEWS
Congratulations to Saint Pius X Alumni, Morgan Johnston!
Model UN Team Competes at American University!
Bishop McGuinness is proud to welcome back our Model U.N. team after they competed this past weekend in Washington, DC. This conference was orchestrated by American University and involved over 900 delegates from across the world. The Model U.N team was able to leave victorious and bring home two awards- Best Delegate by Blake Miller and Honorable Mention by Morgan Johnston. Delegates in this simulation focused on the Indo-Pacific region and were required to demonstrate all qualities of a United Nations diplomat; these include diplomacy, integrity, and problem-solving. We are so proud of the work all involved accomplished and cannot wait to see the outcomes of future competitions.

Bishop Students Take Flight!
The Mid-Carolina Regional Airport in Salisbury, NC
Students enrolled in the BMCHS Aviation program enjoyed the thrill of a general aviation flight while earning their Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles certificates.  These newest Young Eagles experienced how their classroom and simulator exercises translated into the real world of flying while also gaining access to nearly $600 worth of free online and in-person flight training benefits through EAA.  To date, 14 BMHS students have become Young Eagles with additional opportunities offered every month.
