GRADUATING CLASS OF 2023 SPOTLIGHT

Kasia Nyland

Kasia has been at the school for 11 years, and has been an invaluable student and peer. Her earliest memory took place one morning in Kindergarten when she took too long to colour in a picture because she refused to go “outside of the lines.” As a co-chair of the Community Action Team for Social Justice, Kasia has continued to make positive impacts on the community, leading initiatives such as Volunteer Month, Harvest Project food drives, and the One Girl Can fundraisers. Teachers describe her as intelligent, focussed, and a natural leader. If she could give the younger students one piece of advice, it would be to find balance by discovering what helps you rest, recover, and re-energise.

Kasia plans to take a gap year after graduation, to travel and feed her passion for writing by finishing her latest novel.

GRIZZLY UPDATE

Grade 4 & 5 Basketball

On Tuesday, both teams attended the ISEA Play Day. The girls team travelled to Mulgrave and had a spectacular day of teamwork, determination, and drive. In 8 mini-games, the players demonstrated their growing skills throughout the friendly competition. Coach O'Connor and Coach Wilson are incredibly proud of their personal and team achievements throughout the season.

The boys team travelled to the Richmond Oval for a similar day of exciting matches and excellent basketball. The highlight of the day was a big win against Meadowridge School, where their rebounding and fast-break skills came together to put up some big points. Coach Klein and Coach Deacon are so impressed with each athlete and their collaboration as a team throughout the season. Great work, Grizzlies!

Junior Varsity Boys Basketball

This team had a ton of learning and laughs throughout the season. The athletes showed courage, commitment to fundamentals, boxing out, and motion offence. Coach Woodward and Coach McCulla are very pleased with this team's development, and look forward to a big season next year.

Senior Varsity Boys Basketball

The team qualified for the GVISAA play-off rounds for the first time in the history of Brockton. After strong wins in the regular season, they were matched against BC Christian Academy in the knockout rounds. In a tight battle on Monday night, with some junior players in attendance, the team lost out 43-46 in a game that really could have gone either way. A fantastic achievement for Brockton basketball and we will look to build on this success for next season.

CEDAR TREE INVESTIGATIONS

This past week in Outdoor Education, Grade 2 students explored Western Red Cedars found in the Pacific Northwest. While hiking in Lynn Canyon, students were encouraged to explore and investigate the big and beautiful red cedar trees by getting up close, observing identifiable characteristics such as the trunk, needles, seed cones, bark, and the rich soil filled with nutrients.

LEARNING IN PLACE

The Grade 10 Language and Literature class spent part of an afternoon this week writing descriptively on Brockton’s beautiful campus. Students evoked vivid imagery to create a paragraph, poem, or list that appealed to the senses. Through meditative time in nature, students successfully produced work of high quality. Ms. Scott looks forward to the warmer weather when we can spend more time outside, learning with the land!

HARVEST PROJECT FOOD DRIVE

Submitted by the Community Action Team for Social Justice

From February 21st - March 10th, the Community Action Team for Social Justice, in collaboration with Junior Leadership, will be hosting a Harvest Project food drive initiative. Donations can be dropped off at the bins in the lobbies of either the Junior or Senior Schools. This year, we have a goal to collect 1000 food items for the Harvest Project, and if the school meets this goal, we will all celebrate with a casual day!

The Harvest Project provides many services, including a food bank and rent bank, and their goal is “extending a hand up, not a hand out." This means they want to help those with fewer opportunities to get on their feet, so they don’t need to rely on organizations like the Harvest Project anymore. This year is their 30th anniversary, and we hope everyone helps out and brings a few items in to support the great work they do in our community. If families would like to donate money to the Harvest project, they can use the QR code below. Monetary donations will not be counted towards the school wide casual day.

Thank you, Brockton!
