Learn About Professional Development Resources, Benefits, and the UF Postdoc Association at Postdoc Orientation on Feb. 22nd

Postdoc Orientation is offered the last Wednesday of every month via Zoom and is here to help you make the most of your postdoc experience at UF. You do not have to be a new postdoc to join an orientation session. Everyone is welcome!
The next session is, Feb. 22nd, 2:30-4:30pm ET

Objectives of Orientation:
  • Become familiar with resources available to you across campus
  • Learn about policies relevant to postdocs
  • Learn about your UF benefits & meet with UF benefits counselors
  • Begin drafting or refine your professional development plan
  • Meet fellow postdocs and the UF Postdoc Association

UF Scripps Research Fest Features Postdocs - Abstracts Due March 24th

The Society of Research Fellows (SRF) at The Wertheim UF Scripps Institute is organizing Research Fest for May 19, 2023.
 
This year's Research Fest will be a wonderful opportunity for the postdocs at The Wertheim UF Scripps Institute, MPFI, FAU and UF (Gainesville), to showcase their research efforts and network with peers with overlapping interests. This event will include poster and oral presentations, distinguished lecture seminar and vendor showcase. Registration is free to all
 
We invite the postdocs to submit their abstracts for poster/oral presentations. This event is primarily for postdocs, but graduate students are also encouraged to apply. Abstracts for both talks and posters should not be longer than 250 words. Abstracts will be due on March 24 at 11:59 PM. The time limit for the oral presentations is 15 minutes, and a diverse representation of labs is encouraged. The abstracts chosen for posters/talks will be notified by mid-April 2023.
 
Please email your abstracts to scrps-srf@mail.ufl.edu. Please make sure to indicate in the email your title (postdoc/grad student), affiliation, and your preference for poster/talk.

Institute for Learning in Retirement & UF Aging Science Award Program - Applications Due Feb. 24th

Call for Entries: ILR/UF Aging Science Award Program - 2023
Sponsored by Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) at Oak Hammock and the University of Florida

The ILR invites undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral researchers to submit their research to the ILR/UF Aging Science Award Program. The purpose of these awards is to increase students’ scholarly investigation of issues related to older adults or the aging process. Selected applicants will present their research in poster format and receive a $50 gift card. A panel of judges will select three finalists to advance to the next stage of competition, which is a slide presentation with question-and-answer session. The judges will rank the finalists, who will receive respectively: 1st Place-$800, 2nd Place-$400, 3rd Place-$200.

To be considered, an abstract of the applicant’s research (maximum of 250 words) must be submitted by the deadline and written in language accessible to a community lay audience. The applicant must be first author, and the project must be completed with results finalized. The abstract should include: objectives of the research; study methods; findings and interpretation. A critical component of the abstracts, posters, and slide presentations is the ability to present to both expert and community lay audiences.

American Association for Cancer Research Travel Grants - Applications Due Feb 24th

Announcing the AACR Travel Grant 2023

Proteintech is proud to support researchers by offering 2 x $1,000 travel grants to attend the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida April 14-19, 2023.

Entry dates: February 2nd - 24th, 2023
Winners announced: March 17th, 2023

UF/NVIDIA Hackathon: Researcher-Led Teams Apply by March 1

The second annual University of Florida Open Hackathon will be held May 17-25, 2023. Scientists and computing experts from NVIDIA, along with UFIT staff, will serve as mentors to help participating teams optimize their code for GPU acceleration. The application deadline is March 1, 2023.

HiPerGator will serve as the work platform for the hackathon. Priority will be given to UF-affiliated research groups and their collaborators, but faculty, students, and research staff from all Florida universities and SEC member institutions can apply. Anyone with questions about the application process or the hackathon format are welcome to contact UF’s AI Support Team Lead Ms. Ying Zhang.

UF Postdoc Association Social Feb. 23rd

IMPORTANT UPDATE: UFPDA monthly socials hosted at Depot Park will now be scheduled for the Last Thursday each month starting in February. 
 
UFPDA is organizing a social gathering at Depot Park near Humblewood Fire Pizza Trailer (127 SE Depot Ave) on Thursday, February 23rd starting at 6:00pm.
 
It's the perfect opportunity to unwind, plan for the weekend, and meet new postdocs or catch up with friends. Depot Park (and UFPDA) is pet and family friendly, so feel free to bring them along.

Women in HPC & AI Panel and Luncheon - Feb. 22nd

UF Information Technology hosts semesterly Women in HPC & AI panel discussions to celebrate and promote women working in research computing and AI.  The Spring 2023 panel focuses on health science research and natural language processing. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend the panel, which is free and includes lunch. Pre-registration is mandatory:

Career MODE Program - Applications Due Feb. 21st

The application deadline for the  ‘Career MODE’ Training program is near. This exciting NIH/NIGMS funded program (R25GM143298) is seeking to enlist it’s 2nd cohort of early-stage Investigators from across the United States. The Program commitment is 7-11 hrs. per month and can  accommodate trainees ongoing work schedule. The program will entail:       

  • A hybrid (virtual and optional in-person) 11-month program aimed to supplement careers of current postdocs/newly appointed faculty in biomedical sciences. (Program commitment is 7-11 hrs. per month).  
  • Mentored research with two hand-selected internationally recognized leaders.       
  • NIH Grant writing training, editing, and consulting services for submitting  K- and R-awards.  
  • PI Leadership training for managing and running a successful lab as a PI.      
  • Full Scholarships are available for half of the program attendees.

“Engaging Respectfully and Effectively in International Development Research Collaborations”
Guest speaker: Elizabeth Hoffecker, Lead Research Scientist MIT, Local Innovation Group, MIT

In this talk, Elizabeth Hoffecker, will share a set of practices that she and  her colleagues at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) D-Lab have developed for engaging in respectful, mutually-enriching, long-term collaborations with scholars and practitioner- researchers from around the world. Drawing on over 10 years of experience conducting international development research at MIT involving projects and collaborators from over 10 countries on six continents, Elizabeth will share strategies to preempt and, if needed, to address some of the common pitfalls and challenges encountered in forming and sustaining respectful, long-term international research partnerships.

Rochester Institute of Technology Future Faculty Career Exploration Program - Apply by Feb. 28th

Started in 2003, the Future Faculty Career Exploration Program is a rigorous four-day program designed for African American, Latino American, and Native American scholars and artists to experience a “behind the scenes” glimpse into life as a faculty member at RIT. Participants spend time learning from and networking with RIT administration, faculty, and students, practicing interview skills and job-talk presentations—while exploring the research, teaching and service expectations of RIT faculty.

This competitive, nationwide search welcomes scholars from all disciplines offered at RIT. We encourage you to explore our colleges and departments to see how your research or artistic endeavors best fit into RIT. If chosen to participate, RIT will cover your transportation, lodging, and meals for the duration of the program.

Inclusive teaching means designing and teaching courses in ways that foster talent in all students, but especially those who come from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. In this two-part workshop, participants will get familiarized important concepts of diversity equity and inclusion, and the role of teaching methods in embracing student diversity in all forms. Also, attendees will discuss practical strategies of inclusive teaching that can be incorporated into everyday student interactions and during course design and assessment. Transferring PhD Skills into Medical Writing - Career Development Seminar Feb. 16th

The COM Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences is excited to host their February Career Development Seminar next Thursday, February 16th from 4-5pm with Dr. Aarti Urs. This will be an in-person seminar with food, at MBI Room LG 101A.

Dr. Aarti Urs received her PhD in Cell Biology from Duke University where her research focused on identifying novel mechanotransduction pathways. Following this, she worked as a tech licensing intern at UF innovate as well as a Postdoctoral Researcher at UF. She began freelance scientific writing/correspondence in 2019 in and then continued her medical writing career as a Clinical Medical Writer and Regulatory Medical Writer with various companies including Criterion Edge, Zimmer Biomet, Edwards Lifesciences, and currently with Indus MedTech Solutions. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and photography
