HEADWATERS WINE CLUB
March 2022 Shipment

Dear <<First Name>>,

It’s March and spring has sprung around here! The wild flowers are popping and the sap is running! Chefs love this season for the range of exciting options emerging at the farmer’s market. Sara is no exception and she’s been coming home with Meyer lemons, green garlic, asparagus, and local wild salmon. The recent Equinox also reminds us that it is time to refresh our wine reserves. We’re craving crunchy, fruit-driven wines that marry with herbaceous springtime foods.

+OUR SUGGESTIONS

2021 Saveria Vineyard, Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir ($60 / $51.00 Club Price) - Now in our 10th year at Saveria, the vineyard is firing on all cylinders. Much of that can be attributed to our partnership there with star-viticulturist Prudy Foxx, aka "the vine whisperer." Her approach to farming is site-specific and born of countless hours spent walking the rows. The 2021 Saveria, not surprisingly, was one of the wines-of-the-vintage for us. The dark and red fruit is delivered on the back of the wine's tell: a coniferous quality bespoke of the redwoods enclosing the vineyard. Prudy calls it "airroir"--a clever riff on terroir--and says the grapes respirate the evergreen forest, the briny Monterey Bay, and the coastal flora in the space between.

2021 Edmeades Vineyard, Anderson Valley Pinot Noir ($68 / $57.80 Club Price) - Situated in the deep end of the valley on the south side of Hwy-128, the historic Edmeades Vineyard tumbles down a sandstone slope into the Navarro River. Redwoods abound. A reliable ocean-born breeze keeps things fresh. This historic site is credited with the first-ever vineyard in the Anderson Valley AVA: EDMEADES (c)1963. From the small but mighty 2021 vintage, we picked out 6 bins of fruit and made a satin structured wine with partial whole clusters that smells like alpine strawberries, forest floor, clove, and violets. This wines will reward a little patience in your cellar.

2019 Lolonis Vineyard, Redwood Valley Valdiguie ($41 / $34.85 Club Price) - On the eastern side of the Lolonis Vineyard, there’s a whacky block co-planted with Semillon and Valdiguie. We've been tussling with that old vine Valdiguie since 2013 (just tasted from magnum recently, it was delish). Each year we've made adjustments in the vineyard with the goal of achieving slightly more developed flavors in the wine. We've also been exploring ways to tame the wine's prodigious tannins, and in 2019 we harvested perfectly ripe berries, gently extracted the wine, and went to barrel early to keep the wine fresh and juicy. Gushing with blue and red berry fruit, purple flowers, and wild herbs--this is your new surprise! A red for late spring BBQ's! *3-bottle limit*

2020 Casa Seca Vineyard, Russian River Valley Chardonnay ($68 / $57.80 Club Price) - We’ll never forget the day we got a hand-written postcard in the mail from Eva Dehlinger offering us some of her family's precious Chardonnay grapes. The vineyard is sandwiched between Kistler and old Dehlinger estate on Vine Hill Rd. Primo dirt. Planted in the 1980s on rare 8X8' spacing, to Wente Chardonnay, on AXR-1 rootstock, with no irrigation. In 2020, this was one of the standout loads of fruit we brought in all year. Intriguing notes of tangerine, crushed almond, yellow plum, and gun flint. California's answer to Meursault. *WINE CLUB ONLY* *3-bottle limit*

2019 Skycrest Vineyard, Anderson Valley Chardonnay ($62 / 52.70 Club Price) - Skycrest is the Anderson Valley AVA’s highest elevation vineyard site, sitting at 2,500 feet above sea level. Pushing out of fractured grey shale along the ridge lines above Boonville, the vineyard is constantly in the wind which brings low yields. This combination results in a racy mountain Chardonnay that we fermented on wild yeasts in 4 neutral puncheon barrels and gave an additional 6-months in stainless steel to come into focus. The resulting wine shows alpine notes in the glass—pine needle and lemon verbena and pulverized rock. Sara has been pairing it with white sea bass smeared with miso butter, and steamed in a cabbage leaf.

Enjoy the wines!
